i too am interested in astro-photography. i have converted FD 800mm f5.6l, FD 600mm, and FD 300mm f2.8l they should make interesting astro lenses. how much weight does your motor drive support?
I've got my Canon 100-400 version I mounted on the dovetail bracket.
My dovetail bracket had two 1/4x20 threaded holes on either side of center.
Went to Home Depot, purchased a big washer for the top, to have an even top mount for the lens foot, otherwise it would be cocked.
Also bought a 1" 1/4x20 bolt, and a another washer, used as a spacer for the bolt.
May have to trim the bolt a bit for my RSS clamp usage, uncertain, will try it later.
But, so far, working for the lens.
I can only imagine my Canon FD 500/4.5L will work the same.
M42, Orion's Nebula.
DeepSkyStacker stack from samll test stack of 11 jpg frames.
No tracking, just took many burst shots.
Panasonic GH4, Canon 100-400L @ 400, Metabones T Speedbooster 0.64XL
Hey Jack, you might want to take a look at the astrophotography info here .... its a little technical in places but is filled with useful, practical information
Thanks, David. I've been to Roger's website. You're right...it's quite technical. Personally, I don't care for his techniques and don't like most of his images.

That and the fact that he thinks modded cameras are no good.
I was able to get this image of the Orion Nebula with only about 50 seconds of total exposure using stacked images from my Canon 6D and 400mm f/5.6L lens.
