p.1 #1 · Another proud 100-400 II owner!

My copy arrived today!

I took it out for a spin on my 70D, a very cooperative Northern Mockingbrid -- with a deformed bill (but it did not seem to be bothered by it, I saw it eating earthworms without any difficulty) -- posed for me.

All these were shot at 400mm, wide open, ISO 400, sharpened slightly, but I specifically did not apply any NR to preserve the details.

I must say I am impressed! This is definitely better than the older version at wide open -- the older one was a bit soft at 400mm f/5.6, I usually had to stop it down a bit, to f/6.3 or f/7.1 to get good sharpness.

I did not do any AFMA, and judging by these photos, it does not look like I need it!

Congratulations Howard. I also have the 70D and will be ordering this lens soon. Will you be trying it with a 1.4x TC?

Hi, I don't think it will AF with TCs (unless you tape the pins). I am not sure if I will try that combo in the near future; if I need the reach, I probably will just use the 300 f/2.8 II + TCs.

When I get the 7D II one day, surely I will try that combo.

That poor bird has beak mites that are drilling through and eating up his beak which will lead to a long and painful death. Wish I hadn't seen it.

Sorry to hear that. I thought it was just an accidentally broken off bill and I was hoping that it would regenerate and the bird would be good again.

Untreated, the beak will grow contorted and continue to break until there is nothing left and he will starve. Even if treated it is questionable if the beak will grow back functionally. There are different kinds of mites and they are all terrible. Very sad.

I took it out for another test this morning, and I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with this lens (I do not say this very often).

The last one was taken at MFD at 400mm, full-frame (resized not cropped):

Another proud 100-400 II owner!

I'm confused: why does owning a camera lens make you proud? Does said ownership represent some sort of hard-won achievement? Does it indicate that you've made some kind of contribution to the betterment of humanity (for example, does it qualify you for membership in Lenses Without Borders)?

Great shots Howard. I can't wait to get mine on my 70D (back-ordered at B&H). If my copy is as sharp as yours is, I'll be proud too.

May I quote Merriam-Webster for the language and attitudinally challenged, "proud, adjective \ˈprau̇d\

very happy and pleased because of something you have done, something you own, someone you know or are related to, etc. : feeling pride
