This is superb sampling of the results the rig can pump out in the hands of an expert. Delightful viewing. So sharp my eyes are bleeding (a line someone once put in one of my posts). Great job Socrate.

Amazing bird shots.

Both sets hand held, 1/40 @ 400.

Thank you, Zenon. Glad to see the lens performing quite well in less than ideal conditions.
I haven't tried the lens on the my 5d3 yet, but I'm hoping it performs as good as yours

Hey Socrate

This comparison is far more more useful that the controlled tests that people often use to evaluate gear. I want to know how the gear performs in the real world, with moving birds; These examples do just this. The 1DIV looks a whisker crisper to me, but if you mixed up the images, I probably couldn't tell which image came from which camera. More than anything else, you show that people who know what they're doing can get good shots with any decent rig.

Thank you for the kind words, Dorian

these are awesome.
to my untrained eye, the differene is in the bokeh. Again, I am no expert, but that changes the perception of the sharpness of the subjet, IMHO

Thank you, kdacharya.

Gorgeous shots!! Seems the IF shots might be just a tiny bit sharper than the 7D2, but both sets are awesome!

Today I decided to go back to my "studio" and try the Mk IV paired with the 100-400L II to see how it compares to the 7D II and 100-400L II combo. Hard to tell They both perform very satisfactory. May be the Mk IV shows a better sharpness. May be.
I'm cross posting this post in the Canon Forum (trying this new feature)
For those interested in the pics taken with the same lens paired with a 7D II they can be check out here:

I have checked both picture sets.

Even in this screen resolution, it is visible that the images from the 1D IV show just a little more dynamic range in the white feathers, and the 1D IV also preserves more detail and structure in the feathers.

The 7D II is good, but it does not reach up to 1D IV quality.

Thanks for taking the time to check the images. I really appreciate your comments. I thought the same just working with the files and I'm glad you were able to confirm that

Now you have me baffled! I have been waiting months for the new 400 DO II to ship and now you got me thinking. Maybe I should save the $4500 and buty the new 100-400!

Useful comparison and great shots as I have come to expect from you!

Have a great holiday season!

I don't shoot many birds, but I do shoot long lenses for sports. These photos are just superb. By glancing at the images I prefer the 1D files, as they just look richer to me, but it could be in the processing. I'd be happy with any of them.

It seems that the 100-400 ii is better on the larger sensors (i.e.: larger pixels), which makes perfect sense. The high MP APS-C sensors have always pushed the limitations of this type of lens, and apparently this one is no different.
The old 100-400 exhibited better IQ on my 5Diii vs my 7D.

I just got the new lens and have had no time to do any experimentation.

Yeah, I read that too. Used mine the other day to take some obsolete shots:
