Now you have me baffled! I have been waiting months for the new 400 DO II to ship and now you got me thinking. Maybe I should save the $4500 and buty the new 100-400!
Useful comparison and great shots as I have come to expect from you!
Have a great holiday season!

I don't shoot many birds, but I do shoot long lenses for sports. These photos are just superb. By glancing at the images I prefer the 1D files, as they just look richer to me, but it could be in the processing. I'd be happy with any of them.
Thanks. I concur I try to be consistent with my editing. All the images are edited in ACR with resizing and sharping done in PS. However looking at the raw files the MkIV's do have a better look What I also noticed is that The 7DII files have a more natural feel than the 7D.

It seems that the 100-400 ii is better on the larger sensors (i.e.: larger pixels), which makes perfect sense. The high MP APS-C sensors have always pushed the limitations of this type of lens, and apparently this one is no different.
The old 100-400 exhibited better IQ on my 5Diii vs my 7D.
I just got the new lens and have had no time to do any experimentation.
Thanks for your comments, Eric

I swore i read on here the 1d iv is obsolete.
I'm so out of the loop I didn't even know Canon launched a mkII version of the 1-400
amazing combo w the mk4 for sure!
Canon should send you gear for free...you showcase their lenses better than their "official" photographers

Hey, there! Ciao Nello, che piacrere risentirti. Ho appena notato il tuo commento e ti volevo ringraziare. I remember very well you shooting always with the 100-400. Time to change?
Take care

I've been wondering about the comparison of the two Socrate. I'm not sure you are the right person to judge considering how well you do with any piece of equipment. These look beautiful....do you find the 1D4 files look different? So far I've been nonplussed by the 7D2...and am really considering going back to one of my other bodies as a backup to the 1Dx....great set as usual!

Thank you, Eric. I don't believe I have yet enough data to definitely tell you winch camera is better. hard to tell. From that little I have done I have notice that the MkIV shows a tad better IQ. On the other hand i believe a get a bit more keepers with the 7DII (and more reach).
I believe at the end is a matter of personal preferences and you should use the camera you feel more comfortable with.

Sorry I guess I've been out of it for a while (1D1) but what's "IF"? I can't find any definition of it (hope you'll forgive--its a really short acronym )

Aha! Thanks mucho. Not a birder, in the traditional sense***. Exquisite shots, really. I had the older 28-300L for similar purposes and found it lacking (on 1D1).
***I owned some raw-boned land in SE Oklahoma, and the Blue Herons in that area (we all had many ponds) taking off, landing, cruising by....was an instant "set brain to STUN" paralysis event. Astounding, so gorgeous!
