mitesh is that egret eating a duckling? That's awesome
Hi Jonny,
Yes, it is. I was walking along a trail with my daughter last spring when we came around a bend and chanced upon that scene. It was a shocking thing for her to see at age 7 as the egret plucked the chick up and devoured it.
The images you captured on those remote traps are awesome, btw!

I'm lovin this thread!!
I got this wood duck shot a while back.... show with a $800 sigma 150-500 and a sony a580. (can't remember what I paid for it, somthing like 500$) so thats like $1300. then plus dodads, IDK if those count (like sigma flash unit, tripod, etc)
I have since moved laterally toward a 1d ii (like many here) and a 400 5.6L with the 1.4 tc. that adds up to more I think, but not THAT much more...

Do more with less, HUZZAH!
Jay
Actually I forgot- I think the flash was off the camera. scratch that part. (just looked at the shot bigger than the thumbnail)
This is the REAL version that was edited properly: and also a shot from the 1dii and 400 5.6, straight up handheld from a kayak, no anything else:

Not a DSLR, so I am disqualified. Canon G3, circa 2003. Still have the camera. It could do video, shoot in raw and came with a built in intervalometer and painfully slow focus. Current value: not much.

First two taken with an SL1 and 18-200 ($360 refurb body + $350 used lens = $710). Last two taken with a 20D and 200/2.8L ($200 + $750 = $950).
Well done, Mitesh. In fact, I think you might have not gone in the right gear direction when you spent a fortune on some top echelon gears such as 800L, 1DX, 7DMkII and 200-400L.
There is still time to find your way back: I can let you have my near-new 40D dirt cheap, unless you'd like to trade your 7DMkII for it........I mean an even trade..

Peter, dare we grade these images on a curve of some sort? I got into a DSLR specifically to capture my growing children (another form of wildlife, ineligible in this instance) so this lakeside shoot must be among my first outings to shoot other lifeforms. This is a Rebel XTi and I believe a Canon 75-300 non IS (Version II) I think (??). Let's see what the EXIF says. Deducting marks for (lack of) artistic merit I'm still throwing it in the mix as KEH lists the XTi at $109 and VIII of the 75-300 at $69 to $199....
Edit to add: NO! This was an outing with a borrowed Tokina 80-400. KEH lists one at $278 so $387 all in.

Camster. $387 worth of gears puts you close to the leading edge of the race to the bottom.
Good work.
Here's a real oldie because 20D was used ($129 per KEH), the very same one which Camster got for his kid, plus the inevitable/trusty 200 f/2.8 ($788 new) = $917.
Canon 1000d & 50mm F1.8 mkII I can't see a body on KEH so I'll go with about $220 if that's ok (Slightly less than Petkal's 40d) and $105 for the lens = $305

I take back my previous comment in this thread - I found an old photo I liked with my first ever digital setup haha.. Technically it's likely my first ever bird in flight, taken casually after a day of beach volleyball I remember..
Canon 30D ($192 - $199) with EF-S 17-85 ($168 - $248). I don't really know which of KEH's ratings to use so I'll leave that to someone else:

I don't need no STINKING lens!
2nd submission, photo taken about an hour ago.
I know, I know, its a little fuzzy due to DPP not having a DLO profile available for pinhole adapted EOS 40D cameras! What is Canon thinking! I need to complain to Chuck Westfall about this heinous lack of support!

Dave, that is superb. Indeed, the rules do not stipulate that a lens is mandatory. What might hold your submission back in the final analysis, is a relative lack of subject detail. But hey, art has no sharpness prerequisites.

I must tell you I haven't seen this much photographic creativity and photographic skill/talent showcased under one roof on FM in a very long time. Good for you.

Dang Peter, that's a good one. My daughter has yet to capture anything so swell with that 20D!

Thanx Camster, remember that when it comes to experience with photography, I am probably a few years ahead of your kid. Give her a bit more time, and she'll catch up.

Here we have 1DMkIIN ($575 per KEH) + 100 f/2.8 USM Macro ($500 per KEH)=$1,075.
Not totally cheap, but what a potent BIF combo that was, and still is, because that camera and lens are readily available from a variety of used gear sources.
