p.1 #1 · FM Canon Contest: Wildlife photography on a shoestring budget

Let us see who can shoot wildlife with the cheapest gears, i.e., camera + lens.
The cheaper, the better. The winning photo entries will be those taken by the very cheapest kit of the cheap.

A few contest rules:

(1) The gears must include a Canon dSLR. The lens could be by a 3rd party.
(2) Pictures of house pets, domestic animals, or zoo animals are not allowed in the contest.
(3) Shots of roadkill or otherwise expired/taxidermied animals are not allowed.

(4) No iPhones.......they are not considered Canon dSLRs.
(5) When adding the total price of your gears, use the following guideline: for gears currently in production please apply the new retail price by Adorama or equivalent. For gears out of production, you may wish to use the KEH used gear sale website, for the particular condition of your equipment.

I will try to use my new shots only without resorting to the archives, but you may post whatever you wish, as long as YOU have taken those pictures.

My submission image shown below was shot today using the following gears: handheld 40D ($270) + 200 f/2.8 ($780 new) which adds up to $1,050 total gear cost.

So this begs the question Peter: what will said winner, win? Other than the overwhelming respect of his or her peers, of course...

Petkal,

I'll play along. Rebel XTi and Canon 28-135 lens. Both of which I still have! I imagine so far I'm low on the Totem Pole. (Edit: Maybe not low on totem pole ?? Gotta go do some research on what I paid for that - I know the lens was about $450, but the camera??)

OK, I forgot another rule: baiting is allowed as long as the bait is not a living creature. Your bait could be seeds, peanuts, breadcrumbs, frozen fish, potatoe chips, and some such foodstuffs.

This Cardinal was actually stunned as he had hit our window and was recovering

That might be a disqualifying event!

I will approach Fred about the 1st prize: I reckon that could be something like a CPS coffee mug or a 5% discount voucher towards the purchase of a Holgamatic 3.

No problem..... you are being honest about it. What is the total current cost of your gears ?

Peter, I've only older images and only a few, no shooting in a long time.

Before I post, how do you define 'Wildlife'?
And are we using original gear expense or current value

Jerry, wildlife is kinda wild and most definitely has some life in them.
We are using current used value estimates for gears out of production. For gears still in production, we are using major retailers' price for new equipment.

OK, John, I get it now........I do not mind accepting the submissions at their face value. This is light-hearted contest/thread anyways, and any potential prizes will have a low $ value.

Peter, is it the value of the gear used or what one paid for it? Just wondering because I use a beater 40D that I got for free with an even more beater Sigma 500 f/4.5 that I also got for free.

Question. How does one view the EXIF information? I use Google Chrome. Is that my problem? Not seeing EXIF information.

I primarily use FxIF Data on FireFox and Exif Viewer v2.00 by Alan Raskin. They appear in the right click on the image box that opens when installed. I don't know what is available for Chrome, but you can probably install an Exif reader add on for chrome.
