Update: Thanks all for voting as the featured thread. There are so many great photographers and great pictures posted here, its a great honor. Much appreciated. Scott

------------------------

On Wednesday, I went to Assiniboine. Assiniboine is a British Columbia Provincial Park just below Banff National Park in Alberta.

I went in with some of my friends who were keen hikers. I have been to Assiniboine so I was okay with travel shots (without the tripod). However I met two guys at the lodge who were keen photographers so I showed them the way up the the best (in my opinion) spot to Assiniboine.

Even after scouting the site in the light and seeing grizzly bear diggings, they agreed to go hiking with me in the dark.

We tried it on the first morning (5AM start, hiking with head lamps 1 hour in the 5" snow at -10c and then standing in the wind until fingers and feet were numb). I was surprised how well people from Indiana and Brussels could walk in the dark. But the snow came in and the pictures were not great.

So then I hiked with my hiking friends after returning for breakfast.

Surprisely they were up for it again on the 2nd morning. But now at -15c and icey. Anyway the 2nd morning was fantastic (until the fingers were numb).

Here are the best of my pictures for two days in the fall.

Comments and feedback are appreciated. Scott

1-4 of 4

1 of 4 - Close of Mt Assiniboine

2 of 4 - 2nd Day with Color

3 of 4 - 1st Morning - A very cold windy morning with numb feet and face and legs

4 of 4 - Pano from the 2nd Morning

Those are all some great shots. I really like #2 how you incorporated the stars (is that a blend?). That pano is also sweet. Kudos for braving the snow and cold.

ckcarr: Glad you like the landscapes. It felt like an effort walking in the dark and cold while talking to avoid the grizzlies. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

quickking: Number 2 is a single shot before sunrise (so no need for blending - just long exposure with 17mm - iso 100 and 30s). Glad you like it. The first morning I wondered if it was worth it but the 2nd warmed my soul (but not my extremities ). Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

I like the pano shot a lot. It is much more balanced to my eyes. I love snowed mountains to look at!

I am glad you like the pano. This is a wide wide spot. But when the light is right - its pretty. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

All are fantastic Scott. My favorite is No. 3, for the subtle light changes throughout. The pano is amazing for its scope, so much to take in. It looks like you were just a tad early for the peak larches, and the snow seems like a good coating for early Fall. It looks cold.

Stellar shots Scott!! I really like the pano the best as it feels nice and balanced to my eye. My second favorite is actually the first one. PP is spot on as well. Such a beautiful location.... PS - did you use the Canon 17mm TSE?

All are wonderful shots, Scott. The numb fingers were worth the results in my opinion!

NCAndy: The larch are a week past peak. The lack of color is that the leaves have mostly fallen. I took what I could get for timing at the lodge but the 3rd week in September in Alberta is the best. Glad you like 3. Mt Assiniboine just would not come out that day. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Gary Clennan: Glad you like them. It is a spectacular spot. The pano was 3 stitched with TS17, the first was my TS90, and the others were singles using TS17. I think its the lens to have for this spot. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

rxgolf: They were in the Park Thank you kind words. Much appreciated. Scott

pliukait: Sometimes you are almost frozen but you see the light and it does not matter. Glad you like the shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

CarlG: Glad you like the pano. I think this spot and this time of the year is my favorite on that pano. 1/2 the time its too cold/cloudy but when the mountain comes through its worth it. Glad you liked them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

intimistic: Glad you like them. It was a great couple of days to play hookie from work. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

dbehrens: Thanks for the ranking. Its great to know the order. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Scott, I think it says something that people are picking a different images as their favorite. I was going to choose the pano, but that dominant peak is so centered, it keeps my eyes and doesn't allow me to drink in the rest of the beautiful, serene scene very easily. So I "take" No. 2 - same peak with a wisp of pink and a touch of stars. Very nice.

Glad you like the wisp of stars. I got up at 12 midnight to see if I could catch the milky way but the 1/3 moon was too bright even behind Assiniboine. So I gave up at 2 and then waited for 5am for the 1 hour hike for sunrise. I will look ad the dominant and consider different framing. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Great shots. All of them. I particularly like the last one, the pano.
What a fun adventure you took them on.
