p.1 #1 · Boston - we had a whale of a time, (hint...)
We went to Boston the first part of September to visit our son. I wanted to take my 500mm in case I had a chance to shoot, but since I didn't want to leave it in our motel room when not in use, I left it at home. I did take a small backpack with the 400 F5.6 and a 70-200mm, plus the 24-105 as my walk-around lens. I carried this on my back all day every day, and we did not rent a car.
The highlight of our trip, (besides seeing our son), was a whale watching trip. We saw a ton, no - make that many tons, of whales. One of the crew said it was the best day they had had since May. We saw both Minke and Humpback whales. The Minke never came close, but the Humpbacks put on quite a show. We saw them far off and close, and 360 degrees around the boat. They came up singly and in groups. They swam under the boat. I was rushing back and forth, side to side. It was great fun for both my wife and me.
Here are a few of the 400+ shots I took in about an hour. As always, C&C appreciated, and exif should be attached.
6- light was tough, and I wound up blowing whites a few times in order to properly expose the darks. This is one of those shots, but it does show the fin.
7- Not a great shot, but certainly a lucky shot. When whales breach, it's over pretty quickly, so you have to have the lens pointed in the right direction when they surface. I got lucky for the one breach we saw that day.

Hey Ron, you had a banner day on the sea! I do feel for you carrying your gear around like that...hope you didn't hurt yourself and have to go on sick leave ....retirement suits you well my friend! You really got some great shots and love the ones with the baleen prominently displayed...those are very cool. Aquarium shots are surprisingly difficult and you go two very nice jellies.
Hope you can get to the pond this year and maybe we can shoot together

I spent some time in the aquarium in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago but I found focus & DOF difficult shooting through glass into water. These shots are great. Love the whales.

Nice series and wonderful storyline. I especially like the last few. The black backgrounds along with the interesting colors makes the Jellyfish look like they're suspended in deep space (or in the deep ocean depths). Well done.
