I heard this time last year from a Canon rep that they were working on a high res 1D but were frustrated because they couldn't match the quality of the Sony sensors. I told him baaa I'm not interested in another expensive brick from Canon....which he replied "Ya most people I talked to aren't either". Could they have made much progress in a year ?? or have they decided to just get one out there even if it doesn't match the Nikons & Sony's....I guess we will know shortly.

Hmm, I've heard from several 'reps' that film is dead, seems a bit premature me thinks if you look about on the Alt forum

If Focus Locus would be kind enough to find my past responses, you might find a hypothesis that addresses your question.
Sony holds a patent that Canon has been unable to work around or overcome leaving them in a holding pattern.
Nikon most likely has an exclusive deal with Sony that precludes Canon from purchasing chips or production rights.

I guess it will take 20 years, from the moment Sony patented the sensor tech in question, for Canon to have a sensor that matches or exceeds Sony's.
THIS guy thinks Canon's sensors are currently the best though...
Me thinks a high MP sensor will just make my pics suck more. But I'll tell you one thing: If this vicious rumor is true , when I attend Javits, if it's indeed there, you'll see pics of it, and if it's handleable, I'll take a selfie holding it.
"Canon confirmed they are working on High Megapixel camera sensors and my trusted sources Sony is working on such cameras too. Sounds almost like both companies are working on it “on sync” because both companies are rumored to deliver around 50 Megapixels cameras within a close 3-6 months timeframe from now.
I am yet not sure about the rumor about Canon but it’s said that Canon could launch a 50MP Full Frame camera in mid October. Sony will “counterattack” beginning of 2015 (likely in January?). And as for now I heard about a 46 Megapixel FF sensor and a 54 Megapixel FF sensor. Maybe the first is coming…first. And the second sensor on a later camera. The specs I got about the 54 Megapixel sensor are:
54 Megapixel sensor
2460 focusing points
focusing area covers 78% of the entire sensor"

Rumor has it Sony is developing a more powerful shutter mechanism for the new camera, so in the spirit of the A7R they can continue to give their customers more "bang" for the buck...
So we might see a brick 1Ds high MP series camera for about $8K and a Sony A7 successor mirrorless FF camera for about $2.5K. It will be intersting to see which functions of the new 1DsX will be implemented in a 5D MkIV end of 2015...and which features will be crippled.

Wow, I don't know what to say, to admire your thoroughness or plenitude of time at disposal.
Well, maybe it's a choice to dedicate the time to this because I want my site to become a trusted source of information and I can't resist delving deeper if my gut tells me to.
I don't know if you followed my site at all, but if you go back just a bit, you can see that I follow up on news items if warranted, which is rare in this community.
"Like everyone else, he has every right to post on a forum what he believes will happen."
My Question: Will Frank be able to take the backlash if it doesn't happen? As the readers have the same right to post on said forums if the prediction crashes. It might get ugly.
As for me, I will not indulge in it if the prediction fails. Chalk it up as great entertainment. Still 29 days to go! Pullin for ya Frank!
There were very clear clues leading to McNamara as the poster early on as I found when I looked around a bit. (He dropped the biggest one himself.) I never went past that though, unlike the author of the piece at the link.
Reminds me of something that I believe I read in a book by Colin Fletcher ("The Complete Walker") many years ago. To paraphrase: "When in doubt, doubt."
