Thanks for putting other people test together for review, however did you compare your sony sensor and canon sensor in actual practice? I have my A7r and 1Dx shooting side by side in low ISO on tripod and native lens for over 6 months but I can never found the A7r have 2 stops better DR than the 1Dx or get A7r do better image than 1Dx. How can you get this 2 stops benefit in actual? Appreciate if you can teach me the technique. I don't want to see this kind of lab test or control test anymore because
...Show more

are you comparing them all at 100% view? That is comparing 36MP to 18MP to 12MP as if they were all at the same scale.

are you perhaps metering the A7r shots lower than the 1DX shots?

Yes, I almost tried all. If anyone of you have a way to show the A7r have the 2 stops DR benefit over 1Dx or A7s in actual picture taking I can do a on site test to compare the three camera again.

John, beside our observation it might be hard to isolate these differences. A6000 might have cleaner files, less NR, better tone curves that has been measured by DXO in better color depth number. Better JPG engine? etc...Which reminds me some colors we have seen before in older A7R thread: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1247661/45#11930572

I'm definitely not disagreeing with you, except to replace the word 'better' with the word 'different' .

still think 11-13 stops of DR is enough for almost everyone, but there are those spec isane crowds that see a .1 change in something and go nuts...and comes out the graphs, charts but no real world pics,if the pics you take in real world shooting have such variance in light and dark to have to worry about DR so much, then maybe going back to film is for you...

I think you mean going back to reversal film. That is the way to capture a larger range.

Yes, this is what I found, when I refer to these 3rd party web test to buy an A7r for better landscape so I don't need to carry the heavy 1Dx to the mountain, the result come is disappointing, not only I can't get the 2 stops benefit, I even can't get the overall IQ better than the 1Dx. Another example is that when my friend bought the new launch A7s, the same thing happen, DXO score lower but in actual the IQ is obviously better than the A7r. In actual shooting I can tell IQ wise 1Dx = A7s > A7r, resolution wise A7r > 1Dx > A7s. So far what I found the truth is that, no free lunch, more you paid more you get, still no change in this scenario

Reversal film is slide film (it is 'reversed' in the processing) and it has a narrower dynamic range than digital and much less than colour negative film

Actually, I have done some of my best work on Hilton Head and we are considering retiring there.

Could we please stay "on topic"

Funny that none of the people wanting more DR have ever made a big deal about 0.1 stops or whatnot, in fact, we are the ones who have been careful to say that so and so 5D3 is slightly worse for DR than the 5D2 at ISO100 but the difference is utterly meaningless.

Also funny that the people with the charts didn't go to the charts and stuff until after having run into problems in the real world and then tried to figure out what was going on. While it seems that often many of those who most fervently mock them end up having portfolios consisting of nothing more than a few snapshots of cats in the backyard, half out of focus or whatnot (and not in an artistically purposeful way).

Plus, at full res, we have more like 10-11 stops not 11-13.

Also people have become used to avoiding what hasn't worked in the past so they automatically skip over scenes without even realizing it.

And sure, you take billions of pics just fine with DR as Canon has it, but it's really not difficult to find a lot of shots where a few extra stops would help.

I was going to comment that it is very unamerican of you to be satisfied with what you have but then I noticed you weren't from the US .

In all seriousness, improvements are always welcome and useful in ways that we are not able to sometimes perceive until we have the opportunity to use new tools are our disposal. DR is one of those things that never jumped out as a problem until the sony sensors showed us all what was possible with more of it (as well as clean shadow noise).
