p.1 #1 · Night Herons and Snowy Egret the Prey (Warning)
Here's some new black and yellow crowned night heron shots that I've never posted before. A late nesting species at the night heron rookery turned out to be glossy ibis. The juvenile glossy came out with some of the late nesting black crowns which still had not fledged yet. Aside from that, I witnessed some very unusual behavior. Just in the cove a black backed gull landed onto a fishing snowy egret and killed and ate him with it's mate. I've never seen a snowy egret get killed by another bird before.

#11-15 Warning, snowy egret predation. I threw out the editing rule books here, centered crop and generic, strictly for behavior. Heavy crops of 800 f5.6 plus 1.4x.
p.1 #5 · Night Herons and Snowy Egret the Prey (Warning)
Wow. Amazing predation sequence. I wonder if the egret already was injured or sick - pretty darn unusual to see a gull as predator with the prey an egret.

The photos are stunning herb, but the predation sequence is unbelievable! I've seen black-backed gulls grab puffins before, but I can't believe it took an egret. It's hard to imagine that an egret has any defences against that.

Stunning work Herb and what a sequence with the egret and seagull. I've never seen that situation before and didn't realize that a gull would attack an egret.

Super shots Herb. The predation shots are tough to view (as nature sometimes is) but the quality is undeniable. Well captured

Thanks for the comments. The snowy egret seemed healthy and was successfully hunting baitfish when it was attacked.
