Much better built quality and much much nicer focus ring. Lenght is the same, diameter quite a bit smaller.

Optically I think the Voigtländer has better across the frame sharpness at f/1.7 and it has certainly less LoCA. I also like the CV's sun stars.

Field curvature should be the same on all a7 cameras because they have the smae filter stack thickness.

OK. I may have to try the new CV35/1.7 some day. I blame your nice landscape images Phillip. That's strange as I seldom shoot landscapes.
Cows... they are hard to direct, no? What's up with hiding behind a twig?

cows are somewhat curious as long as you approach slow enough but they don't hold their attention for long until they continue grazing

Growing up on a farm in which I raised hundreds of cattle, I would have to say that Jonas is right that they are hard to direct, but as Philip comments suggests they are highly driven by food. If you bring them a handful of hay they will always come up to you when you approach them, but if you don't have food they will quickly be on their way to find some. Some are more skittish than others, but all are eating machines and always on the look out for food. they are easy to photograph if you know you, but in my experience rarely prove a very compelling image.

Really great examples showing off the lens, Phillip!

Here are a bunch from a beach visit last week...

The first 4 are likely at f/11, the next couple between f/4-5.6, the next two wide open and the remainder probably around f/4 or maybe f/2.8 for the last one...

I'm finding for images where I want relatively even sky illumination, like in the early images, I need to apply a radial filter in LR and open up the corners around 1/3 stop. I'd guess if I wasn't using the 35 Cron ASPH profile in-camera with the M240 that the vignetting would be even stronger. In this respect, the lens reminds me a lot of the 28 Cron. I'll also mention again it has very little distortion, probably the best of the RF lenses I'm currently using.

The CV35 is very sharp across the frame but only if you focus on the corners and sacrifice a tiny little bit of center sharpness. My copy is sharpest in the center at the 5m setting (short adapter) but the corners are best at the 3m setting (at f/8).

TY for this. We are lucky to have you shooting the lens with great understanding of the body. I'm impressed with yours and Ron's shots

I have to thank Ron as well, his images made me buy it and i think it will become my most used lens. For the past three weeks I have hardly used anything else.

Now someone with a a7xM needs to buy it to show us how much the field curvature improves.
And I would like to see how much Sony's new BSI sensor improves the vignetting charactestic.

Like you Phillip, I'm really enjoying mine on my A7R, and it has become my default go-to lens. I saw the guys at my local camera shop yesterday, and they have promised to give me a call next time that they have an A7RII in so that we can see how it goes with the BSI sensor. That would be a major factor for me in deciding to upgrade to the new camera body, but another forum member has told me that a couple of other wide M-mount lens, unusable on the A7, have become much more tractable on the A7RII, particularly with respect to marginal magenta colour.

Love those images, Ron, particularly the transitions from sharp to oof.

Thanks Phillip and John!

I have to admit I'm using the lens more than I thought I would, too. I leave it on the camera as the default go-to lens. For the last ~3 years I've shot pretty much only the 28 Cron in this focal length range. I'm finding 35mm a nice change of pace and an easy substitute, though there are rendering/colour differences that I slightly prefer with the 28 Cron...

A couple more from a week earlier than the previous series:

my review is done: http://phillipreeve.net/blog/voigtlander-ultron-11-7-35-mm-review/

I think it's a great one lens setup and it is the lens I have enjoyed the most in 2015

Excellent Job on the lens review. Clear consise and accurate, covering pretty much everything. You don't see that often. I should send it to Huff.

Thanks

Writing such a review takes a lot of time, I probably spent more than 10 hours in front of my PC writing it and I had great weather in the last few weeks and I used it a lot so I could really learn to know it. That's nothing you can do if you review stuff for a living.

Lovely pics, Phillip and an excellent review. Have you ever used the CV 35 1.2? Any thoughts on the merits of each?

No I haven't used the Nokton. From what I have read I think it is a little less sharp around f/2 and the bokeh isn't as nice. I have not read anything about field curvature so that is probably not an issue with the 1.2/35.

Thx Phillip. Maybe someone will do a comparison. I like the Nokton, tho it's sharpness at wide apertures is far better at close range. For distance, it needs to be stopped down but does very well once you do. I don't have any complaint with its bokeh for my use--usually low light portraiture at large apertures. The main drawbacks to me are weight and large aperture distance/infinity shots where it suffers from lack of contrast/sharpness.

I've only just heard about this lens having bought a Loxia 35 a few weeks back and I think I'm falling in love with it a bit.

Just wondering: a few people have said the focal plane curvature might be less exaggerated on the a7rII because of the thinner filter stack, and a few people have mentioned they would try it. So... Has anyone tried it yet?

Not so much that I'm on the fence about it but I'd love to know.

You may be confusing corner color casts with sensor stack thickness. IIRC, sensor stack is the same thickness, but the new BSI sensor is less susceptible to corner color cast.

Could well be... Just interested in knowing if a few people who mentioned in this thread that it might impact the field curvature. Maybe not. Still really loving this lens. Might just buy it to test it out against the Loxia and keep whichever i like more.

I'm trying to decide on which single 35 I'll use for my new M6TTL. The first round, I had a C-Biogon 35/2.8, but I'm tempted to use a single faster lens so I'll have something I can use when light drops a bit. Summicrons are out of my price range so I'm narrowed down to the ZM Biogon f/2, Hexar 35/2, or the new Voigtlander.

For those of you who have shot a lot, especially if you have this lens and a Leica body, how is the
focus shift. I've read reports of it having a little bit, but almost not noticeable. What is your experience?

Phillip's images are really impressing me with this lens. I currently have the 40/1.4CV and I find it to be "adequate" regarding sharpness and flare/ghosting on myA7RII. I may just have to grab 35/1.7 and give it a go - it's a little longer than I want for a compact carry-around, but that might be the price to pay for a better lens.
