The image does not contain very deep shadows. The original jpg image has virtually zero pixles below RGB values around 8-9. So I don't think we can get too much out of it.
I have faith in Skibum5's analysis of the masked sensor areas, where he found no traces of banding.

+1, wait for more wider DR scene when distortion values begin to choke AWB module then we can tell the real number.

And guess what? There are still tens of thousands of pros and amateurs competently shooting with Canon bodies that are no longer in production. Gee, I wonder how they do it?
