True enough. The 7D2 appears to be another great Canon camera with an OK Canon sensor, just like the 5D3. And I'm sure they'll sell lots. But if they try this again with the 5D4, they won't sell one to me.

If this story about the 46MP 1DsX is true we will definitely see if Canon has moved to a new fab and potentially much better sensor. It has to be a portent to the future and an indicator of where the 5D IV is heading IMO.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends. Oh, this is going to be a glorious month of speculation, doom, and gloom.

On the 7D2, Canon basically used the same 5D2 to 5D3 strategy, with big changes to the AF system, better weather sealing/body strength, and higher FPS. However, sensor improvements were not as significant.

It worked before and it's going to work again.

It probably will work out. They did hit the basic action specs super well. It should be a beast in those regards. It certain has the best action still performance specs of any aps-c body.

(won't work for any other model though at this point, other than maybe the 1DX action line)

For the record, here is how: with the plugin of Magic Lantern, the same 5d3 hardware has became 4 stops DR better than itself. This is why it still a mediocre camera. Real camera does not need ML Viagra. And this is the same for all canon current bodies

I read all these threads often with eyebrows raised, I know people want a lot more from each camera that comes out. The 5DIII for me is awesome, Ive done weddings, portraits that in November as part of a huge commemoration here in Australia my images will be up on buildings in a big light show, Ive seen some already on our local entertainment center and the images look fine, Ive seen images printed to taller than me and as wide again from 5D3 and no-one had there nose up against the images checking for pixels. As for the 7DII I think it will be a great camera for people like me who really wont ever be able to afford what ever replaces the 1DX, sometimes you just have to work with what you can afford and thank god Canon still makes affordable cameras that on the whole are pretty good.

Much better than the last month of hopeless bitching about how lost Canon is when it comes to their senile sensor processes that the 7D2 sensor is (still probably) based on. It is like a light at the end of the dark shadow sensor noise days

It's sort of like I own a BMW M3 but it's not as good as a Porsche 911 GT3 comparison. Both are awesome, but one is more awesome. 5D III is a terrific camera for sure, but it would be nice to have the greater DR and shadow pushability of the Sony sensors. That's icing on the cake.

No it probably is just a symptom of Canon being a large company and hence experiencing at least some of the dysfunction that goes on within large companies (ie. insufficient communication between the hardware and firmware team, or pressure to release products 'too soon' and with incomplete feature support, or other similar dysfunction)

At least now people who want the feature are able to get it, that's what really matters in the end.

I think Canon knows what it's doing. I've already talked to 3 photography students that are getting the 7D2 (or their parents are getting it for them) and all they talk about is 10FPS. I've yet to talk to any person shooting action that brings up low ISO DR. It just wasn't a priority for the main role of this camera.

The vast majority of 5D3's are not using ML and people take outstanding photos with them everyday. To say it's mediocre is pretty pathetic. You may not be able to get results from it but plenty of others do.

I do agree though that Canon is not optimizing their bodies from a firmware standpoint.

Where? So far I am only reading "Durchhalteparolen" (in English something like "keep up paroles") in regard to any new sensor. Before the 7D MkII specs were released, here all kind of fancy new double layer specs for the sensor were hoped and discussed - in the end nada. What you got is a slightly modified 70D sensor. And nothing is even announced yet about any new high MP/more DR sensor from Canon.

Too right. And the 7D2 will become the best-selling DSLR despite the whining from those that want a better sensor. They can go buy a different brand, while the rest of the world happily shoots with Canon's current models. And when the day comes that Canon does bring out a newer and better sensor, the same whiners will still be whining about something else.

And guess what? There are still tens of thousands of pros and amateurs competently shooting with Canon bodies that are no longer in production. Gee, I wonder how they do it?

Context. Discussion was about firmware and ML improvements. If you want it you can have the DR boost with canon+ML.

This is simply the Achilles heel of the 5DMkIII - the sensor. I believe the 5D MkII with the D800E sensor would have been a simply astonishing camera. As mttran said - ML software helps cranking out a bit more DR, but still nothing compared to the current D810/A7R sensor technology. If this is okay or not for a photographer is a subjective opinion - likely for many who still use the 5D MkIII it is okay because they don't need the wide DR provided in the Exmor sensors. If we balance out everything on the other hand how the 5D MkIII holds up against competitive products out there (e.g. the D810), it is - mediocre. I would have even given it this rating when it first competed against the D800(E).

Has anyone seen this? 7D2 RAW file opened with IRFanview and pushed by 3.5 stops.

Looks good.

What do you think?

You are welcome, JC. I like black and white things, there is no grey to debate here. Two different results while the same hardware
