Yeah, with no moving parts it'd probably be fine...
despite Amazon's horrific excuse for packaging.

Everyone I know that preordered from B&H has one on the way. When did you place the order?

Great! Let me know how it works out!

I doesn't seem to mount. The prodruding piece of glass on the TC seems to be clashing with the rear baffle of the 180mm f2.8 APO.

I remember playing with this baffle when I installed the Leitax adapter, so it may be possible to remove it, but I would be concerned with unwanted internal reflexions.

Cheers,
Bernard

I hate converters but decided to give this one a try. Should be here by midweek. If it doesn't have the previous model's CA, it'll be good enough for portraiture with the 500.

I wouldn't say that about all 500VR's in general. My 1.4EII is more than fine on my 500VR and D700 and D800 with barely any AF fine tune.

We (I) preordered the day after the announcement. You will most likely be taken care of with the next shipment.

Yes, their directions say to remove it before installing new Leitax mount. Are you going to try an dc remove it and see if there is any problem with internal reflections?

I just ordered the III from Amazon, which still shows availability if anyone is interested.

I don't think so, being able to use the TC-14 III with the 180mm f2.8 isn't a priority for me.

Cheers,
Bernard

OK

I have enjoyed using mine both stand alone and with Leica 2x APO extender on my Canon1ds3 but now want to use it with my D800E. If I Leitax the R180 2.8 APO then i am stick using Nikon TC's unless I somehow convert both ends of my Leica 2x TC. Not sure how/if that can be done.
Though even the Leica 2x TC may not be good enough for D800 level resolution.

Wayne the inner baffle can be removed when converting some Leica R lenses. I looked into this for my 280/4 APO but decided to leitax my 1.4x APO instead. If I remember correctly you need to cut or glue the baffle tabs in place if you do the mod. Like you I'm concerned about internal reflections and wasn't that keen about doing a non-reversible mod on such a rare lens unless I could find a replacement baffle. I checked with Leica USA and Solms but none exist. So I've held out.

As for the 2x APO male/female flange mod a good cine/photo machinist with an adventurous streak could sort it out if you're really keen but there are no bolt on solutions available. And David at Leitax isn't planning to do it as far as I know.
But those baffles would be a great use of the new 3d printer technology. They are such precise fitting rascals with multiple step ridges and dainty mounting taps you'd think having a 3d printer knock off a few would be just the ticket. I'm not sure if services like this exist yet but it would be useful to us if they did. Good luck with it.

Phil

PS Apologies to the OP for veering off thread

No lies, it works! No CA along high-contrast edges, no perceptible loss of image quality, and - the best part - no AF tuning on my D800/500 mm combo. At least not for this portrait taken in the dark, lol.

I agree completely with your first two points, the AF fine tune value on my D810 is the same as with the 1.4 II.
Testing is now on hold, thunderstorms have arrived.

Inage looks great with TC. Now, I'm waiting for AF speed for BIF shots. Thanks for sharing.

AF speed seems unaffected. Oddly, there's some vignetting even at f/8 (cropped away here) that seems uncorrectable with the usual tools. Not an issue except in full-frame 36 mp files with a light background like sky.

Christian, looking at your BIF image, looks like TC 14EIII doesn't affect AF speed.

Lance, another great looking image. One question, how far away were you from the bird?
