I still think the tc17e iii would have been more useful, but I will probably just use the 2.0 iii until they release the 17 iii if they do in a year or so.

Probably means that the new 300mm f/4 AF-S VRIII is coming...
All old lenses are now junk...
If they're priced that way on the used market it will make for some very happy campers, myself included. I've got a 300/4.5 AI'd in serious need of upgrading.
kind of one of the reasons I picked up a 300mm 2.8 vr over a 400mm 2.8 afs-II
I think Nikon maybe making a change over to little support for non-g lenses on newer accessories, not sure what else it would affect other than teleconverter as far as lenses goes. im sure they would never release a body that has less support with non g lenses, but heck maybe in 10 years they may change over to camera bodies supporting electronic aperture only, as the newest E lenses are electronic aperture.
I guess I don't blame Nikon for changing their teleconverter. the were supporting aperture ring lenses and g lenses with past converters, now the new ones support g and E lenses, I don't know enough about how it all works but I assume the newest E lenses such as the 400mm 2.8 still work with the current model teleconverters.
While the photos look great, older TC 14EII version worked great with 70-200/2.8 VRII version.
Also, it isn't fair to do this test with D4s, which has the best of the best Nikon AF!
I want to see some test photos with working class bodies like D4 or D800 with working class lens like 500/4 VR

So it will not work with a Leitax'd Leica R180/2.8 APO lens on my D800E
Short answer: It might in that case. Won't work with AF/AF-I/AF-D lenses or actual AI lenses, but your 180 APO doesn't engage the AI follower tab anyways so it just might work.

I could try that out tonight since I just got my TC-14III and own the Leitax converted 180mm f2.8 APO. I'll see if I can find time.

Thats funny stuff right there Steve! Sorry I couldn't test it on a D4 and 500 F4 but if that is a working class lens, I have finally breached the poverty line. Welfare department here I come!

I said it because 70-200VR always worked very well with TC 14EII, but 500mm/4 VR doesn't like TCs at all. I really would like to know if 500mm/4 VR works well with this new TC 14EIII before I jump on it. Anyone else have this TC w/500VR?

I have used the TC 14EII numerous times with my 500/4 VR & D3s, D3x, D800e & D700.. Works great. I have the TC 14EIII coming in this week hopefully and will be testing it on a two week outing in Alaska. I expect it will exceed my II in focusing speed, maybe?, using on a D810 & D4s.

Wednesday after lunch I will have everything for the testing. In my case, aside from the 1.4tcII needing +15 of AF Fine Tune it work quite well with the 500/4 G.
I will be doing side by side testing to see if that improves.

I have the 500mm f/4 and D800. Like you, I have never been happy with a TC on my 500. Just received the new TC.
Tried it this afternoon, but the light was not great. Had some high ISO's , so that might account for some loss of detail.
I did notice it has a much more snug fit , doesn't move around. Doesn't seem to need any fine tuning either . Autofocus did not hunt , seemed to work fine. Hopefully will have some sun tomorrow and will test it again.
Here is a one shot in raw. I did nothing but crop and resize for posting. I zeroed out the sharpening and noise reduction in Lightroom, so this is a shot with absolutely no sharpening or noise reduction or any processing.
Wow, great shot, Birdied.
This is wonderful even without any sharpening or colour boost. I'm almost confident toward getting one of this TC 14EIII. Thanks for posting, Roberta.
