Let me begin this totally non scientific, no charts, no brick walls, first impression by saying just what I eluded too. If you want to look at distortion on brick walls or MTF charts or the like, move on because you will not find it here. I got the TC yesterday and shot with it for the first time tonight. I will also say I am not one who really likes to use TCs. I much prefer to get the focal length I want on the lens.
All that being said, I have to admit I am pretty darned impressed. First thing I noticed was that my copy fit very snugly to my 70-200 with no wobbles or wiggles. The next thing I noticed, or didn't notice, was any decrease in AF speed. If it was there, it was barely perceptible. Finally, I was very pleased with the image quality. I have incuded several samples for you to look at. Game time started at 6 so light was starting to fade so ISO equivalencies were up there starting I believe at 1000 and working my way up to 2500 befoe halftime. I will let you judge image quality for yourself but I was pleased.
All in all, I am very impressed with this TC. I did try it a little after the sun was gone but the F4 really made me have to crank up the ISO to get the shutter speed I wanted so the field I am at is a cave outside the 30s. Anyway, judge the image quality for yourself.....
Thanks for posting this as well, I appreciate the info. I'm trying to decide to get one and hope your post prompts others with it to add to the discussion. Also hoping everyone notices you say this is your perception after using it and not a scientific study so the thread stays positive instead of asking for charts, graphs, and other scientific methods of investigation.

Pic's looks great.
Was wondering it looks like the this new TC has a rubber gasket on it, is that correct?
Also it looks like the plastic slide thing that's on all the other TC's is missing which makes this for G lenses only and will not work on older AF-S lenses like the 300/4 AF-S and 80-200 AF-S

Nikon's chart indicates compatibility with the 300/4 AF-S,I suspect that's an error on the table as all the other D AF-I and AF-S lenses are not compatible, including the 80-200.
Nikon explains thusly: "Because the maximum aperture coupling ridge and minimum aperture signal post are eliminated with the AF-S TELECONVERTER TC-14E III, “FEE” is displayed on the camera body when these lenses are used, disabling shooting."

The non compatibility with older AF-S teles is simply ridiculous. Shame on Nikon!
Indeed.
It looks like the issue is the lack of an AI follower tab to transmit to the body that the lens is correctly set to minimum aperture, probably to make sealing easier. Nikon could have included a switch-button to detect this as well (like on the bodies which do not have AI tabs) but they seem to have decided not to.
A pity, and one that will have me buying the II version instead as AI/AF-D compatibility is a must for me.

I've always loved the TC14EII . so what more has this to offer ? Is it WR ?
7 elements (totally new optical formula) Fluorine coatings and rubber gasket, AFAIK.
If the new III vs II "improvement" is in the neighborhood of the 20E's IQ upgrade...
methinks we'll all be VERY happy campers.
