p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Need thin EF to Sony E adapter- what would you do?

I want to put an ultra-thin EF to E adapter on my bellows rig to get the maximum focus distance I can from lenses. Something akin to the CY to EF adapters is what I'm going for. Assuming no access to a lathe, how would you go about creating such a thing?

Thanks in advance.

Brad

Hi Brad,

I'd get a Micro Four Third (MFT) Lens to Sony E-Mount adapter, and an EF rear lens cap. Drill a big hole in the EF cap, and stick the adapter through it. Or, if it won't fit 'through', then stick it on the back of the EF cap. Shoe Goo works great for this kind of stuff!

The slimest EF rear caps that I've met are on Kenko teleconverters, they're about 1/2 the depth of a 'regulation' EF rear cap.

OTOH, you could mount the EF lens on a "recessed" board, on the bellows.

What lenses and what bellows are you using?

Okay, so I must owe you a keg by now, Jim. Thank you.

The lenses I'm using are all MF lenses on the Mamiya Auto-Bellows N. I've got these old Bronica S2 lenses made by Nikon, a 50/2.8 and 75/2.8, that have proven to be really good close focus lenses, so I want to get a little more distance out of them. I made the lens adapter as thin as I could out of parts I picked up on eBay (and some grinding with a Dremel and a little Gorilla epoxy) but I'm still only getting about a foot in front of the lens with the 50.

On the back of the rig I've got a Kipon M645 to EF shift adapter and EF to E adapter. I can't slim down the shift adapter any, so the EF to E is the logical place to try. That MFT adapter is a great place to start. I've got a couple of those screw-together macro-ring sets for EF, so I'll try cannibalizing one of those. If that doesn't work, I'll seek out the Kenko lens cap.

In case you don't hear it enough, you are the man.

I can't give you the uncomfortable silence Michael Scott would get here, so I'll just say that I hope it's for different reasons.

I have two rear mounts for my Auto Bellows N, one is the "normal" one supplied with the bellows, and the other is a DIY "slim" mount. I also have both the regular accordian bellows and the bag bellows. The bag bellows doesn't compress as much as the accordian bellows (go figure), but the bag bellows is way better for front standard movements, as you compress the bellows.

Most of the lenses I use on the bellows are 75mm and longer, except for those I use for macro. I have a bunch of adapters that are stuck or screwed to M645 body caps or the back (mount) part of the M645 short extension tube 1, which I can mount on the front standard, including; M42 (and M39 with adapter), Copal 0 lens board, and OM (for a Zuiko 135/4.5). A couple of large-diameter mount thread lenses are actually glued to their own M645 body caps, like my CZJ Tessar 165/4.5 and S-K Xenar 180/4.5. I also have a Copal 1 lens board for a CZ 80/2.8, but I haven't hooked it up yet with a M645 mount, and I use a M645 reverser ring for a M645 C 80/2.8, for macro. I think I have a M645 body cap with a 30mm diameter hole for mounting small lenses, but I can't find it right now.

I can post some photos of this stuff, if you like.

Oooh, I'd love to see the DIY thin rear mount you have in place of the normal if you don't mind. Are you able to maintain rotation with it?

Hi Brad,

I just posted a description of my DIY slim adapter in a new thread,

Mamiya Auto Bellows N slim camera adapter,
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1312178

Sorry it's a bit behind schedule, but I just got a new lens. What can I say ? ...

Yes, but you have to remove the bellows, loosen 'part 4' just a bit, rotate the camera, re-tighten part 4, and then re-attach the bellows. That takes about 10 sec., 20 sec. if you're careful.

Thanks for all the help, Jim. The only problem I ran into with the M4/3 to E adapter was the lens release, or, more specifically, the giant cut out for the lens release, which I go mostly covered with an M42 to A adapter with it's diameter ground down a bit. To that I attached the EF mount I repurposed from a cheap set of tubes. It all went great. The camera was square with the mount, no tilt, no extra vignetting, and I got to infinity with the Nikon/Bronica lenses.

And boy was it not worth it, except that I can now say my curiosity is satisfied. The Nikons (50 and 75/2.8) are okay at infinity, with the 75 being the much stronger performer, and both appear to have at least double layer coating, if not some version of Nikon's multi-layer, so the contrast and color are about the same as the AI/AIS generations. Both are bad at the edges of a the 6x6 and get much worse beyond, something that doesn't get much better when you stop down. The 75 peaks at f/8 and is almost as good at f/11, and the 50 is okay at f/5.6 is the center, but the edges don't get there until f/11. Both are better close focused, though, even there, there's nothing particularly exceptional about them.

Here's one from the 50 using the whole frame (13 shot pano) at maybe a meter or a little more at f/8.
