"Nice images although the first ine is the smallest I have seen in decades on the site!" ??
"The inverse square law applies to a point source!"
Why do you say this? The inverse square law applies to all light and it's distance to the subject. In this case the light falls to below the camera threshold of the F-Stop setting, before it can illuminate my gear stored behind the roses and table in the shot, so no artificial background is needed. F-Stop settings do more than just determine depth of focus. It also removes the lower level light from the ceiling light above, so I can leave it ON during most shoots, but if my needed camera settings or reflections in the shots show that I'm getting effects from the ceiling light, I have a wireless control switch on my camera stand that lets me turn it off briefly for the shot, then back on so I can move around safely.
Your images are of a far higher quality than for "New macro shooters" and few people look here."
I'm a relatively new "still Life" and Macro shooter, athough I've been a photographer and Pro since about 1951. I'm very retired now, but love the art of photography, so I built a small studio in my home to continue my work as a serious hobby. I had tried macro many many years ago in the film days, with some success, but doing it now with good control of flash levels and digital cameras has made it "Fun". So now I consider myself to be a "new macro shooter" and placed these photos here for this reason. These are the first Macro's that I've taken using my now digital cameras. Where do you think I should have posted them?
Macro is not my strong point. All shot with the Nikon Z9 and a Nikkor Z 105. I am trying to get better but fail to get as much in focus as I think I should be able to. Advice, tips and critique (please be kind) appreciated.

I would look into focus stacking. I haven't gotten into it myself, but that is the only way I'm aware of to get greater depth of field in macro photography. Sometimes, even f/22 doesn't provide enough depth.

While stacking gives focus at greater depth, it loses the perspective given by out of focus detail. This can be remedied by including a small aperture frame in the stack.
An alternative approach, which I use for the highest magnifications, is to, for a given magnification, use a wide angle lens rather than a standard or telephoto. This gives the impression of more depth.
I am currently trying out a 63mm Luminar. Its optimum magnification range is about the same as that of my Laowa 25mm x2.5 to x5. You might expect the prime lens to be better than the zoom but the prime is about 50 years old and the zoom is current.
The cost is similar. The Luminar needs an extension of 100mm or more.
My first attempt at macro, Nikon 105 F9, it is a bit cliché, bet hey, gotta start somewhere. I found this a struggle as the smoke was moving around alot and focus was difficult to achieve. I tried to focus on a picture on the same plane of focus and then crossed my fingers and pressed the shutter button - alot....
Edit, thinking about it, this was also the first time I used flash as well! Everyday is a school day it would seem....
Not really a new shooter, but haven't posted to this forum for a very long time and I got a new lens the Voigtlander 35 f/2 APO Ultron. Some won't consider it a macro as it is only 1:2 magnification but I am enjoying using it very much. I hope it is ok to post these here.
