Is it the file size or resolution you were hoping for in sRAW?
Just switch to 12bit compressed NEF for candids if you want the small file size, or simply batch process your candid photos down to 9MP (or whatever resolution you want) after the shoot if you want lower resolution. Takes no time at all to do either, and would be super easy to sort in an image viewer. You can even put those quality settings in My Menu so you can change them in a matter of seconds as you move between formals and candids.
You're right that sRAW is fairly useless, but there are workarounds that result in better, more flexible files that take no effort at all to implement if you REALLY want 9MP or small files....Show more →
I wanted both, a smaller file size and resolution. I was hoping that sRAW would be 16mp like the manual says. The manual says on page 85 that sRAW are about half the sizes as RAW, was hoping that meant around 16mp with the same high dynamic range as a standard RAW. Kind of like shooting with a D4 16mp camera with all the data. I guess that is just hopeful thinking. I didn't want to have to buy a D4 to get the 16mp resolution and smaller file size with a full raw capability. I hope I explained that right.

Ah, I see. Fair enough. Yeah, the "half size" they refer to is file size, not image size unfortunately.
Have you considered just batch processing your 14 bit 36MP files to whatever resolution you want? I imagine it would be easily to grab all the candids after a shoot and start a batch process in just a minute or two. You could also drop to 1.2 crop to save some file size. DX crop is probably too much.

I have an engagement shoot, group shots, and head shots tomorrow, and I will experiment with the batch processing from that. I will try and play with the DX 1.2 and 12bit RAW this weekend with the family. I don't want to experiment on paid gigs. Thanks for the suggestions CanadaMark.

quarter the resolution at half the size! what a deal!
stick with 12bit lossy compressed if you shoot a lot, they're actually really great, 99+% as good and pliable as the largest 14bit.
Yeah 12 bit files are all most people need unless they are doing some heavy shadow pulling or similar. I would venture a guess that most people shooting in 14 bit (myself included) don't often use more than what would still be in a 12 bit file. Nice to have the option though, especially for landscapes .
