Some whale photos from this past weekend. D810 + 80-400 + 12 or 13 hungry whales + unlucky herring + 30 or more fishing boats waiting for a salmon opening the next morning.
I'm envious of your clear Denali views! I was up there for Solstice and the wildfire smoke pretty much obscured everything. Got a glimpse of the mountain on my last morning there. Looks like you had a much better time!
You had to be very close for a 1/4 flash to freeze the motion how close were you?

I was about 2 feet from the curb, the flash was just over my left shoulder. What was going through my mind...dont lean in, dont lean in... and hope that they lean in more or take a more aggressive line.
The first day we arrived at Denali, it's very sunny and dusty, we thought everyday was going to be like this. Then it suddenly became cloudy with light rain the next day, and on the third day smoke from wildfire was blown in by changing wind so we left and headed south. I guess it's really unpredictable in Denali (or Alaska) as they say.

We must've been there the same time. Only my buddy and I stayed :-) My buddy's a pro photog and we had a pro photo permit for the week (let us use his truck and drive the road - no shuttle buses) so we tried to make the best of it. It was my first time up there so it was pretty interesting (and being behind the wheel, driving the passes, was umm, exciting...)
