I do think the AF is somewhat improved compared to the D800. AFC 9-point may be somewhat more center-weighted, and there's no lag to speak of.

Thank you jbonzo1! It does look like a miniature replica.

Here's a close up (as close as I was permitted ) of the #11 Thunder Mustang.

Nice Alpha. Did you use the Group AF or the 9 point Dynamic AF? I just got a D810 to replace the D750 and still learning the settings. Thanks.

Hi Douglas!

I just used the single point AF in AF-C mode. I completely forgot about the x-point dynamic modes. Doh!

I wasn't too impressed with the Group AF on the D4s the last time I shot an air show (w/ 80-400mm G). The Group AF mode is like an Auto mode that you could move a block (or group, ha!) of AF points around. It wouldn't always focus on the part of the plane you wanted in focus. I had many sharp shots....of a wing tip...or other part of the plane that wasn't the cockpit or tail number. Haha

That's why I didn't use it on the D810. I might give it shot again, but I wasn't really happy with it. I think I would have more keepers with the 9-point dynamic though. I should have definitely tried that instead of single point.

Sounds like 9 point Dynamic AF is the way to go. I think the Group AF thingy chooses whatever that is closest. So it's not surprising you got the wing of the plane instead of the cockpit. Maybe the same with birds too. BYW, you got some really nice motion blur for your prop. plane shots.

Regards,

Douglas

9-point AF is astonishingly good. With a D800 I almost certainly would have used single-point AF for shots like this.

A handful of bear photos from a recent road trip thru the Yukon to Denali. All images shot with a D810 + 80-400.

Cheers!

So after a 16 month stint with Canon, I came back(D40-D7K-D600, combined 7 years) to Nikon with the purchase of the D810. A couple days in and paired only with the 50 1.8G(for now) and I can say I absolutely love this body. It was the only body that would have pulled me away from the wonderful Canon 7dmkii(shot the 6d to)and with that latest fire sale on imported bodies from ebay, I pulled the trigger. If not for that sale I would still be with Canon. Mainly I always thought that the 810 was the perfect do all body but with just being a hobbyist, I could not pay $3G's for a body alone. Also Nikons UI and bodies just feel more natural to me.

I only have a handful of shots through it so far. Here's one sample with the 50g

Thanks! When we were with that first one i kept quietly chanting "stand up, stand up" and it did! We were pretty happy. I was even intentionally shooting it wide to include the fireweed and it all worked-much to my surprise.

I'm not a sports photographer at all, but I brought my D810 and my 70-200 to regattas last week-end and it performed very well.

I loved shooting this so much I think i will be renting a 400/2.8 for the occasion next year!
