Any current or former D700 shooters here? I love my D300 and D700 but want to upgrade. I would actually like to get a D4S but really want somewhere around 24 MP's. The D4s has too few and the D810 has "too many."
I have been out of the loop for a while and apart from the extra computer time to process such large images, many folks were leery of such high pixel counts leading to diffraction, moire and other concerns.
Maybe I am too old school about such high pixel counts and that would good to hear. Still I kinda wish there was a D700 replacement with the 24mp count but not in a less robust body like some of NIkon's other DSLR's. ...Show more →
No D700, but I do own a D300 and recently upgraded to a D3X (if that helps you ): robust like the D4s, 24MP, AA filter to kill moire, old school (no video). Not to rain on the D810...that shutter would be nice to have.
As a former Canon shooter, I went from a D-60 to a 10D to a 20D and it seemed like each body got cheaper feeling. My D700 feels rock solid. The dials all have a nice feel when rotated there is no sense of having cut corners. Does the 810 have feel the same or very close to a 700? I should probably just go to a camera store and find out.

The D810, unlike the D800, is a great upgrade from the D700. I also have the D300/D700 combo, and in many ways, the D810 is able to replace both due to the rather high pixel count in DX mode. Still, I wouldn't mind a fast DX camera in the D810 body for sports and as backup. As things are now, the backup for a D810 would be a D700, a D800/E or another D810.
I have chosen to keep the D700, at least for now, but I must admit that when shooting with both bodies together, the D700 shows it age. It's still a great camera, but the D810 is greater, and not least quieter, much quieter....Show more →

I got D810 recently, and have shot with D700 for 5 years. D810's body feels very similar to that of D700. Rock solid. Few things I really like about D810 body so far are .
1. Improved Live View with better LCD, and electronic first curtain shutter, reducing vibration.
2. Quiet shutter
3. Overall it seems 'smarter' , like WB,Flash, etc
I've had a couple days to play with the D810 and I'm loving the group area af and the highlight weighted metering. Most of the images below were taken using both and also using auto iso. The lens is the 600mm VR and was handheld dangling a monopod.
I used raw2nef to convert the images for editing with NX2. There is a bug in WB doing this and you need to change the wb to something other than recorded wb, then switch back to recorded and it corrects itself. It also uses the standard pic control and I load a saved neutral pic control. Using dng produces similar results but, I prefer NX2. To each his/her own.
