So all the Canon Rumors that came out earlier had no bearing on the original post, especially the one dated the same day as this thread started?

Canon themselves specifically said it was coming. Then again Canon also implied it would arrive late 2013 .
One of their high level execs literally out and out said it was coming all the way back in an interview carried out in 2012. He said not to expect too to soon though, like not as soon as early 2013 and said some things that made late 2013 or so sound likely. Obviously, for one reason or another the late 2013 didn't happen.
That's great, I am just saying that with all the material floating around starting in May, and considering the 5 year age of the 7D, my 11 year old could have predicted it.
Now if you can tell us whether there will indeed be a new 100-400 and what its price tag will be at the same time the 7D2 is announced, I might be less skeptical. Plus then I can start saving up for now.

Because Canon stated that the 7D was to start a new model line when they branched off the 50D into the 7D and 60D. Couple that with the cessation of the APS-H line shortly after, leaving alot of functionality and feature to the future of the 7D line.
It would seem pretty silly to expend so much resource to create a new family tree of 1, but then again, stranger things have happened.

Probably Canon was all set to go but suddenly realized they can't use the same old 18MP CMOS again and went back to the drawing board...

1) Maybe he was just running his mouth.
2) Maybe it since got canned as a product, or merged back with the xxD line.
If it was going to happen, it probably would have happened by now. The market isn't growing like it used to so you can expect some consolidation in the different lines.

When you make this kind of statement, be prepared to eat your words in a month or so.
Of course, I need to be prepared to do the same too But I am convinced now that all signs point to the successor to the 7D being announced before or at Photokina.

Japanese executives don't run their mouths. It's not a part of their culture and certainly not from a high up corporate executive.
It's certainly reasonable to think that the camera could have been cancelled at some stage of development. However, with my experience of working in the camera retail industry on and off over several decades, I've seen this type of camera release in the past.
Camera models, until the early digital era, weren't upgrade every year or even every other year. Cameras were updated every 4 or 5 years or even longer. Many photographers that don't have experience with cameras going back 5 decades probably aren't aware of prior update cycles.
My personal opinion is that we are now entering a more mature product cycle and updates aren't to be expected every 1 or 2 years, except in introductory models aimed at general consumers. I don't expect the 1Dx to be updated until 6 months before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Canon may release a new FF model with higher MP specs etc., but don't expect a high frame rate, sports model until about January or February 2016.

I will be perfectly happy if I am proven wrong. It's just what I see here is a bunch of people taking their wishful thinking and trying to make that into reality.

could very well be
or they caught wind of some souped up something or other from Nikon

No, this was not some lower level guy or some guy from a division in another country or whatnot, this was a real bigwig.

70D doesn't make it appear to have been merged at all.
But it's possible it could've been canned. I think it's more likely they got held up by issues with a new sensor type or marketing decided to milk, milk, milk 7D more and just wait since Nikon still didn't do anything (Canon has fallen very much into the reactive rather than ahead of the curve game for the last half decade) or were ready for like 24MP 7fps and caught wind that Nikon was doing 24MP 12fps or something or other and had to delay.

I agree. Nikon simply hasn't pushed them at all on the flagship model to warrant a rush to release. The D4s by many accounts is simply catching up to the 1DX.
Canon will likely make more money if they announce a high-megapixel FF model at Photokina - rather than a 7DII.
So, by that account, a 5DIV with 30+ megapixels is a better candidate than a 7DII.
But whatever they announce at Photokina will be interesting.
If it is a 7DII, it won't be a warmed-over 7D, as they could have done this years ago.
And it won't be another 20-22mp FF model either, as they have too many of these already.

Maybe just a case of waiting for the other shoe to drop (Nikon)?
If you look at most of the recent DSLR offerings by Canikon, their eerily similar.
70D / D7000
1Dx / D4
6D / D600
5D3 / D800 (I guess Canon didn't have that sensor to match)
So much chatter on the next pro/crop body on both sides.

Okay thinking of it did he make any other predictions or statements in the interview that have since come true or not come true?
I'm not one to place much emphasis on a title or rank.
70D doesn't make it appear to have been merged at all.
I was thinking more based on the amazon and other dealer messages pointing people to the 70D now that the 7D is discontinued. Though I know a good salesman only talks about existing products, not future products, so admittedly it's not a strong indicator one way or the other.
I don't think being canned would have anything to do with Nikon. It would have more to do with the lines themselves. The 5D line branched into the 5D3 and 6D, both the 5D3 and the 70D got high-end (or higher-end) focus systems, so to me this leaves the 7D line in an odd place -- what need does it fill and at what price?
