My favorite DX lens is the 35mm 1.8g. It's extremely versatile and affordable.

I agree with OP on the Tamron 17-50 (use it a lot more than my 35 1.8 on D7K), but if you want a great deal, get the non-VC version. Got mine for $200 on Ebay.
