Thanks Gregg and JaKo! (is it Jack?) I really love what you both (and Michael in the R thread, and others too) are posting with the 80. I think what initially drew me to this lens were classic car images posted by another FMer here awhile ago, perhaps from Australia? Or was it also California? I don't remember, other than how the lens rendered the bodywork. It was magic. I also see this in your car photos above.
It will be interesting to see where Leica heads in the future... whether the fast glass will be tweaked to more directly compete against Otus specs, or whether Leica will stay faithful to past and current Lux rendering? I'm eager to see images from the new 28 Lux, as I think it will be indicative. Right now I see Leica as offering multiple options... Faster, slightly 'glowy' lenses, like the Luxes, optimized for wide open performance/rendering, even if not absolutely perfect, and slower, more clinically perfect lenses, like the Elmars (18, 21, 24, 90 macro). The 50AA is an interesting combination of the two...

Crap, I just got myself a R80 today almost by coincidence and thought I would contribute to the thread soon - but then I realized all I have is a measly crop GXR A12 M mount.
Very nice lens, a bit finicky to focus for me but I am getting there.

Ron...love those images above. Color rendition is incredible! I actually need to start shooting the 80 stopped down a bit, to play with it's character. I'm also waiting for a local car shop( Bruce Canepa motorsports) to start their monthly "bring your cars and show them off" events on certain Saturdays. People bring heaps of super cars, and then he(Canepa) opens his shop up... He's got a Veyron, multiple Old and new Porsches(2 959's I believe), Gullwings, track cars...etc...

kosmoskatten, as I mentioned any post with Mandler's glass is benefitting so if you have GXR for now that's OK. Looking forward to your posts and congrats on your new R-80!

Ron (yes, it's Jack) my feeling is that trends shift as post Leitz Leica [the company]moves towards more technically perfect designs. Zeiss equally so but with few old rendering lenses (Sonnar-M 50/1.5?), where Voigtländer keeps reproducing old style rendering glass.
This is kinda funny as few years ago I got few Leica-R specifically for Leica's glow and Zeiss for punch and 3-D like. Without knowing what Leica designers may come up in near future, the old 'glowing' classics may become cherished and wanted for a long time.

Thanks guys!
Congrats Hendrik!! I still have my GXR too , though I rarely use it. Let me know when you want to sell the 80 at a great price. Might be worth picking up a used a7 for it...
Love the rendering in those Jack. Gregg, a bit OT, but saw some of your CY 100/2 images in the a7 thread and love it too! Is it a difficult to find lens?
I only have a handful of Mandler images left to share... Here are some from the 50/1:

Gregg, that should be a great opportunity to work with R-80 at 2-5 meters stopped down to f/2.8-4.
If you have a chance fire it up at f/8 and at infinity!

Jako: thanks for inviting me to the thread, I'll get busy then.
Ron: GXR is still ticking? Good to hear! On the R80: early impressions are very nice though I struggle a bit with nailing focus wide open - which is to be expected I guess. I'll let you know when I've played enough with it to severe the umbilical chord. Me being (primarily) a Zeiss guy this Mandler trip is quite interesting. I am positively surprised by stopped down performance - it is not just a one trick pony.

OK guys, time to start posting. Truth be told, I am finding the 80 very hard to learn. Whereas my previous lens in that focal length was very easy (Summicron M 75). The 'Cron was/is simply very sharp and almost "not there" in pretty much all conditions, so what I saw was what I got and what I wanted. The 'Lux is almost the opposite. In order to get it at its best, I need to think and try out many things.
This is a very care car in perfect condition, a Peugeot 404 cabrio, designed and built by Pinin Farina. Who can imagine that this car, very elegant and stylish IMHO, is the successor to the mundane (I am being very mild) car driven by the famous inspector Columbo?

Very cool car shot Philber!! The 80 has great separation, albeit it's more subtle than other lenses, IMHO.
Kosmoskatten...hitting focus with the 80 can be a little bit of a challenge, but when you do...it's awesome!!

Great stuff, guys. Nice to see this thread staying on the first page.
I realized I had some a99 shots on flickr taken with a couple of Mandler lenses. I shot these for my niece who used to work in the education department at the zoo. She had moved to New Mexico last year and wasn’t able to come home for Christmas, so I wanted to show her how bored her friends were without her. Not that it’s hard to get shots of bored animals in a zoo, but…
TE 250 (I misnamed the file, but the EXIF showed me my error, also it’s not cropped much and they don’t let you get that close to the grizzlies for whatever reason)

Many great additions in one day!
Nice set Bradley. Which Summicron version you're referring as V5? Just checked Leica Compendium and according to Puts last version (1979 to current) was V4.
In any event, your and Ron's shots of '65' building forced me to dust off Summicron-R 50 V2. Shot below captures 'Marine Building' on Burrard in Vancouver.

Running low on Mandler glass images...
Ron, Summilux-M 75 and Noctilux 50/1 would be a good starting point, at least based on many Charles' shots...
Gary, so you ended up with at least three M 50mm lenses. Hopefully all are to stay or Lux-50 ASPH wins hands down?

Charles, your wedding pics with the MM and Octi are awesome! You have managed to give them look which is both vintage and timeless. It is so far removed from my scene that it doesn't bother me, but if I were into this, I'd be so totally jealous that I' d just have to do horrible things to you. Like sticking pins into a a clay statue...
