p.1 #1 · Faking an HDR.

Just been in the mood to do these of late (posted those results elsewhere). Thought I would share a result here. Click here for another result. If you don't like HDRs then you probably won't like this result, but still curious as far as folks opinion; ie, am I even close to getting an HDR look/result?

It is interesting but not my kind of thing, Lyle
As for an HDR look, not to my eye
While there may be extensive highlight and shadow recovery and detail, the image feels very busily textured. I have seen some of that with an HDR grunge look which occ works for me, bot not to this extent
Is there heavy use of clarity/ mid tone extraction?
Scott

Using G'MIC's Bilateral filter set to grain extract to create a convolution layer (set this result to grain merge) which gives the majority of the affect. Did do some anisotrophic smoothing to help reduce noise. Maybe a better description would be surreal as opposed to HDR. lol

surreal, yes
I am not familiar with the terms you are using. Are they specific to GMIC?

Bilateral smoothing's been around long before G'MIC Scott. Grain Extract and Grain Merge are layer properties specific to GIMP and I use these layer properties a lot to apply convolution to an image (think highpass filter set to overlay. The highpass filter result from PS produces a convolution result that you set to overlay to sharpen an image). Yeah; picked up a lot of terms over the years and not all are normal retouch lingo. lol

I'm not opposed to HDR as a whole, just HDR that looks like this.

Understood; you either like the Hobbit/Thomas Kinkade look or not. To each his own.
