Hi everyone - I have only just received my 500mm and have been frustrated by the lack of sharpness at f/4 and f/5.6. I have found that it has to be stopped down to f/8 f/9 before I get what I would call critically sharp images.
I have a D610 and a D810 and both bodies give very similar results. AF fine tune is done and set to +12 for the D810, +15 for the D610. Gitzo tripod and good gimbal head etc etc.
Just wondering what others experience is and if it should be returned to Nikon for calibration.

A couple of geese from a recent trip to Bosque del Apache. Based on what I observed on the trip (600s and 800s confined mostly to tripods), my faith in the 500's easy handholdability remains solid.
It was closer than I would like as well however she never asked for my opinion, and I never offered.
Seriously, she never took her eye off the fish, walked much further away to enjoy her catch.
