Sorry, I don't carry lens and body in hand unless it's very short distance - flat 50' maybe. At my age, it's all too common to trip and fall, will be very costly.
i know what you mean about trips and slips, it's ran through my mind also especially spring and fall when i get out hiking along the lakeshore and it gets covered in ice from splashing waves
Christian, great goldfinch, I can never get that close to them around here, well done.
You all are saving me money, I've been considering upgrading to a 600 but every time I look at this thread I come away thinking "na I'll just keep the 500"

What backpack are you guys using to haul around the big 500mm? I'm looking at a week in Rocky Mountain NP and see what people's recommendations are for a good hiking backpack to fit
I used Think Tank Airport Acceleration. It's a very comfortable and good looking bag. It has room for camera body and also flash stuff and a TC or two. I never try to put the lens mounted on the camera body though. May be a little tight for that.

I use this backpack as well.
In my case it fit's a 500 + 70-200 (or 80-400) + 16-35 (or 24-70) + D700 + D800E + grip + TC's + flash and filters.
The front compartment holds a MBA and iPad
A bit heavy though.
