Great catches, Brian.
I have never witnessed a bird flying upside down with my own eyes, what's the bird?

Thanks Steve
it's a tern, he is actually flying right side up, just his head is upside down, he is shaking off water after diving into the water after a fish, guess you could say these guys literally dive right into their meal

Thanks for the info, Brian!
We don't have those common tern in my area, also a lot of other waterfowls are absent.

Took this image a few hours ago, looks like some sort of owl, but not sure what it is, anyone?

It was flying a little too far from me, never came close.

American Bittern was flying too close to background, making hugely busy background, but I'm not complaining.

If you didn't have the camera though, you'd have been treated to a long show and wishing you had the camera

haha
well you did better than me, this is the best shot i could get of one, heavy crop, boring bg but same thing, one circle around and there he was....gone

that was a year ago the past spring, then this past spring i seen one hunting the fields on the side of the highway, perfect picture, hunting just a couple feet above the ground, by the time i got the camera and lens out of the bag and ready, i got to watch him disappear into heavy brush and vanish, this birding stuff can be damn frustrating at times

Your shots of the grey ghost remind me of the first time I ever saw one. I had just gotten my 500mm and was out by the Mississippi River levee. Off in the distance I see something and low and behold it does just as with you , flies by once never to be seen again.

Not a good shot, by any means, plus a huge crop , but my one and only shot Plus , I have never seen one again .

Birdie

Birded, you must be living on a huge river, great image by all means, love the background.
Is it a huge crop from a D800 file?
Mine was probably less than 10% crop of D800 file.

The Mississippi is pretty wide and deep this far south. I am close to New Orleans. Yes, that was a 100% crop from the D800 . He was really far away

What backpack are you guys using to haul around the big 500mm? I'm looking at a week in Rocky Mountain NP and see what people's recommendations are for a good hiking backpack to fit

^^^ Personally I like the Kinesis L511 w/backback harness which takes the 500VR+body with hood reversed -- but nothing else. It's narrow and doesn't get in the way. I keep the small lenses/accessories in my Lowepro belt+harness system. I never cared for large/bulky "carry everything" backpacks and chose to break things up in a modular fashion to distribute weight, but of course YMMV.

Here's a "cool" shot from a couple of years ago that you folks might appreciate now that we're into the hot weather!

I have the same Kinesis bag, love that it fits with the body mounted, but i use it for storage and transporting, otherwise when hiking i carry the lens and body in hand

I use the same Kinesis L511 with backpack harness, great fit and good for hiking as well.

Sorry, I don't carry lens and body in hand unless it's very short distance - flat 50' maybe. At my age, it's all too common to trip and fall, will be very costly.
