Just a question for you 500mm users... with so many AF-S v1 lenses available for $2400 to $3000 (condition dependent) the lens has piqued my interest. How viable (sharp/AF speed) is the lens on a camera like the D500 or D810. Is it too much of a gamble to buy into an older lens like this since critical parts like AF motors are becoming increasingly scarce? I am not interested in spending $5000... so please don't suggest a 500mm f/4G VR, as I just don't have that type of coin.

thanks,
bruce

I was there a few months ago. I going to buy a afs ll for $2400 in not so good shape and no lens hood also. Got to thinking about af motors and decided on a like new afs ll, with case and everything it should have. When i got it i thought it was actually brand new it was that nice. I paid $3800 for it and love it.

My only issue is any time i try to hand hold it i pull a muscle in my neck so it stays on its own gimbal. I use a d500,d810 and a d4s. Only the d810 needed af tuning.

Beavers have been colonizing Philadelphia's waterways in the past decade. This one is part of a family that moved right into the main Impoundment of the John Heinz NWR last summer.

They're so destructive.

One of my local areas I shoot is just being ravaged by beavers.

I agree they alter landscapes, creating winners and losers in the process. One of the few nonhuman species capable of doing so on a human-like scale. Human-built infrastructures designed without beavers in mind must sometimes be adapted. But "ravaged" and "destructive" is not language I'd use to describe animal behavior.

Here are two images taken a couple days ago, at Ala Spit on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound. Both images were taken with the Nikon D500, the latest Nikkor 500mm f/4 lens, and the latest Nikkor 1.4x teleconverter; shot wide open at f/5.6. The first bird is a male bufflehead, while the second bird is a female common goldeneye.

I recently sold my 600vr and bought the new 500mm vr E as I recently have been hiking anywhere from 2 to 5 miles on a regular basis. The reduction in weight was the motivator in buying the 500mm.
Here are a couple of images from the wetlands.
