Only have a 2 or 3 week opportunity each year with the Buffleheads in my area. They stop here just when ponds & lakes start to thaw. Speedy little guys & great fun to shoot.

Don't know that I could do this sort of swift, close quarters handholding with the significantly heavier 400 or 600 mm.

From my first day a couple months ago with my new-to-me 500mm f4 AFS II, a Northern Harrier in flight taken with my D810. This lens is good luck because I have shot from this location over 100 times and I've NEVER seen a Norther Harrier there.

I am heading to a Bald Eagle habitat this week with this incredible lens, can't wait!!!

From last Friday at the Sacramento NWR in California.

I had been using the non VR AF-S II version for the last couple of years and loved it but the 300mm f4 PF convinced me that VR is more than a gimmick so I just made the move to the 500mm VR (not FL). It accepts the TC-14eIII and work extremely well with it.

I find it to be a gem of a lens. It's heavier than the older AF-S II version but I am able to handhold shots and get sharp results and it works wonderfully well on a bean bag from the car.

And after nearly a year of shooting with the D810, I still prefer the D800's less-crunchy looking files!

I haven't been using mine much lately, its the non VR, AFS II version. Always thinking of replacing it with the VR version (1st). Then I take it out and decide against it. This version is just so darn light and I love the Auto AF only setting for hand holding.

Anyways heres a couple taken last month in the pouring rain. Posted these on N & W also.

From my winter wildlife outing yesterday, D810, 500mm f4D AFSII and TC-14E II, very heavy crop. This lens has incredible sharpness from MFD to infinity, I love it!
