p.1 #1 · Desert Portraits {a little bit of everything}
Congratulations to Lisa_Holloway for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners
I co-taught a workshop with my friend Meg Bitton a few days ago out here in the Vegas area. We had some AMAZING models to work with! This is totally random and I'll add more in as I edit, but I just wanted to share. The day started off pretty crazy with huge black clouds hovering over the entire area. We even got rained on! In the end, the rain ended up adding to the mood of some of the shots, and completely saturated the already beautiful landscape for a whole new look. After a bit, the clouds moved on and the sun came out. It was a beautiful day to be out shooting (albeit a bit chilly).
The images were all shot with the 5DIII +200mm 2.0L and natural light only. No strobes. No reflectors. No speed lights. The city images were shot using ambient city lights.

Lisa,
Your work speaks for itself. You dont need me or anyone to tell you how nice your portraits are. You have a clear formula that works very very well.
But I have a question, do you ever get bored (artistically) shooting the same shot over and over again? I havent opened one of your posts in a while (not anything personal), but I feel that I've seen all of your shots before. I opened this one because of the title 'a little bit of everything'. But yet I see more of the same shots. Perhaps I'm too familiar with your work. I just wonder if you are artistically satisfied (or if that even matters)?
Chuck
PS: I've tried really hard to choose my words carefully and mean no ill-intent and do not have any motivations behind my post. I'm truly wondering about artistic satisfaction.

I'm going to say it again. You're clearly taking Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PED) to keep taking such exquisite pictures, and to keep upping the bar, such as that last maternity shot at night, using the city lights as your background. I'm definitely going to be reporting this PED violation to the PPA.

I feel as though I've read this same post before too, Chuck - such a strange sense of dejavu. This is what I do. I am a portrait photographer - not a FPJ photographer (nothing against them, it's just not me). I love it. No, I do not get bored. If I did, I'd move on. I'm very happy - honestly. Not meant as snotty either - I just wonder why your comments are always questioning my 'artistic satisfaction.' I can assure you that I am perfectly happy with what I'm doing.

A beautiful set as always. The blue dress, red rocks and sunset of #6 all combine to make that image just jump off the screen. I've been to Valley of Fire a couple of times and I think the rain really enhanced the colors of the rocks.

I like 1,2 & 5. For me the green foliage brings the setting into a more 'earthly' realm. 7 is beautiful but has an out-of-this-world feel to it. (Of course in Minnesota we still have a lot of dirty snow on the ground)
#8 shows how well your style works for a very different setting. Although my first thought was 'a pregnant woman would never wear those shoes'.
It must have been a great workshop if it resulted in these nice images.

I know its none of my business, but I have seen such comments on earlier Lisa's threads, so finally grabbing courage to share my thoughts...and this is generic to all those previous comments to and not necessarily limited this particular feedback per say
Myself being fan of Lisa's work and your FPJ threads I think what's called repetition here is actually an artist's style. To give another prospective, someone who is not much into FPJ may find it very repetitive viz. typical lighting/mood, mostly BW shots of kids/family not necessarily in best photographic poses. But is that repetition? Dont think so, To me its an unique artistic style a particular photographer has developed over the years of practice and hard work. This could be said with any wedding, portrait or journalist photographer.
Back to Lisa's supposed to be repetition, I think that's more to do with her specific market/audience demands. e.g. If I hire Lisa after visiting her website/fb and if I get different results instead, I would be totally disappointed thinking Lisa could not "repeat" her past performance now, probably lost her muse which may or may not be actually true.
What I find most amazing about Lisa's work is her repetition in completely positive sense. To me her consistency in delivering same quality of images, week over weeks, year over year in different seasons, different places, mostly without any supporting aids (e.g. reflectors, lights etc) is just astonishing. Its like same actor giving Oscar performance and then actually winning award every year.

Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, Holloway......., soooooo repetitive. Repetitive? Give me a break it's called artistic style. You keep doing what you do Lisa. In a few short years you have made a name for yourself on this forum, and more so your photography business. As I'm writing this I notice 3 of your threads on the forum at the same time, something I seldom see. Your threads draw hundreds of favorable replies. I especially commend you for your images showing the wonder and beauty of motherhood. You have the gift of showing the beauty and innocence of young people. Thank you for sharing your talents with all of us.
regards
Ed
