p.1 #1 · Tamron 150-600mm (second copy)

Notes: My first copy was serial #0018XX. This copy is serial #0070XX. I returned my first copy to a Canadian retailer in February for a full refund. This second copy came from B&H.

These shots were not taken under ideal conditions. Note the high ISO's. All shots were handheld and are about 50% crops. I expect under better conditions to get better results.

As I stated in another thread, the AF in AI Servo mode appears to work okay now on my 1D4. AF in One Shot mode works with a Kenko 1.4x TC DGX.

My only subjects were mostly a male Rufous Hummingbird.

Note: This shot is with the Kenko 1.4x TC. Since it is non-reporting, it does not show 840mm as the focal-length in the EXIF. It also shows the incorrect f-stop.

Can you please post the exact model of the Kenko converter? Thanks.

Thanks for the new images, Tony. Will be keeping an eye on how you make out with this copy as you put it through its paces.

Since that TC is non-reporting, you get to use all your focus points, and the Canon AF algorithm doesn't automatically slow the AF.

Do you find you get better performance with a non-reporting TC than you get with a reporting one? (Not specifically just with this lens, but in general with the Mk4). I have been wondering if the faster AF you should be getting is accurate enough.

Thanks again,

Mark

That Kenco seems to be playing nicely with the Tammy..
Nice static shots Tony.. Looking forward to see how it fares for you for BIF

As always BEAUTIFUL images but just how much post processing went into them? You are very skilled when it comes to getting the max from an image.

Tony, was there a rationale behind purchasing the second copy from B & H and avoiding the Canadian retail experience? i.e. did you know or suspect that B & H inventory was from a second wave/higher serial number that might perform as expected on your 1D IV?

Tony, nice images, and great processing. You do some very clean images at iso 3200. what is your impression looking at 100% crops of these? they look very good at screen size.

Mark, I have not used the Kenko TC that much, and not compared AF speed with the Canon.

Note: My reporting-TC is a Canon and it does not fit on the Tamron.

Thanks. Will see if I am capable to handhold and track BIF's at 600mm.

Thanks. The standard PP that I do with all my images. I consider it an integral part of producing good images.

Since all stock from the first shipments to N. America were sold out, I hoped the second shipments would have corrected the problem, and also I had sold my 7D and got a 70D, so supposedly would not have the AF problem anyway. I simply ordered from the U.S. because I was informed by a Canadian retailer that the U.S. stores always get their Tamron inventory before the Canadian retailers.

Thanks. I never look at 100% crops.

Beautiful shots, Tony.
Thanks for sharing them and your experience with the lens, as well.

So I guess it's good news, right? This one's better?

These look great! Hope this copy meets your expectations, I initially hated mine but I've learned a ton since that initial trial and I'm quite pleased with it now.
