It looks like you had the same experience with the 1D4 when using a Kenko 1.4TC as I did with my 6D....put it on there almost as a joke and it surprised me how well it worked...even in AI Servo. I need to do some more testing to know for sure.

Great... good results.

Same question that you have asked others

Where are the BiF shots?

Beautiful shots, Tony.
Thanks for sharing them and your experience with the lens, as well.

So I guess it's good news, right? This one's better?

Thanks. So far, it appears better.

These look great! Hope this copy meets your expectations, I initially hated mine but I've learned a ton since that initial trial and I'm quite pleased with it now.

Thanks. Hope to test a lot more when weather improves.

The AF certainly works better on my 1D4 than on my 70D. I would describe it as sluggish on the 70D.

^^Great comparison to the 400 5.6L with 1.4TC. That's a combo that I used to have and still miss that great lens.

Regarding using a 1.4TC on the Tamron. I played around with it some on my 6D, and took the tape off of the contacts of my Kenko 1.4TC to allow it to "report" to the body, as I was curious what it'd say. Well....the Tamron must not have the contacts necessary to report anything related to TC's, as it still pretended the TC wasn't there. And I'm still surprised how accurate it seems to be on my 6D.

I'm going to Brookfield Zoo up in Chicago on Friday. I'm taking the 6D/150-600 combo, and going to try the 1.4TC on a few of the shots. We'll see how they come out.

Excellent work! Can't wait to see your BIF shots... I really want to buy this lens again but ONLY if AI-Servo is reliable with my 1D4.

Please clarify something.... Which Kenko TC do you have:

or

I cut and pasted the info you gave earlier and most of the time I got the cheaper one as a result.

Thanks!

Please look at the lens mount side of the Tamron lens and pay close attention to the golden contact pins. There would be two groups. One group would have 2 or 3 contacts and the other group could either have 5 or 8 contacts.

If there are only 5, then the TC will not pickup the info and therefore can not report the correct info to the body. If there are 8 contacts, like all the big whites, then the information gets relayed correctly. The 100-400L is in this configuration, while the wide Ls only have 5 pins.

Please take a picture of the lens mount and post if you have the time.

I'll be happy to post when I get home, but I believe there are 2 groups- as I had previously had tape on the 2nd group to avoid the TC reporting to the camera. Taking the tape off made the TC report correctly for other lenses.

I believe Bryan over at TDP had the same occurrence with the 70-300L, where he added, in that case, a Canon 1.4TC, but the camera ignored it's existence as the lens itself didn't have the contacts for reporting the TC being there.

Anyways, I'll take a picture tonight and post it to solve the mystery.

update: I sold my second copy to someone that was not concerned with the AI Servo issue.

Final verdict: Great lens for One Shot mode shooting, so-so for AI Servo auto-focus on moving subjects.

Better AI Servo AF with my 400 f5.6 + 1.4x TC on 7D, 70D and 1D MkIV.

JMO, take it or leave it.
