Hey everyone,
Does anyone have a work around for those of us that use a Mac and don't have Aperture or iPhoto? The Sony a7 RAW files are supported with an update through Aperture and iPhoto but not to the OS. Files obviously open fine in Lightroom and CaptureOne, but not with preview in OS X Mavericks.

Is that a hypothetical ? I believe that when Apple 'supports' a certain RAW format, it's really baked into the OS and not just an application or 2. Have you tried it? The A7/r is in this update.........

This update only works if you have Aperture 3 or iPhoto '11 installed. I'm looking for a way to have preview work properly on its own. Apple seems to only want to allow the update to install with systems using their other software. Can anyone tell me if I install iPhoto '11 and remove, the update will stay system wide?

Your information is incorrect. All Apple Camera Raw updates are done at the system level. This allows not only Aperture and iPhoto to read supported RAW formats but also Preview, Mail, and other applications. Since all versions of OS X install iPhoto as part of the system upgrade/install, one would have to go out of their way to delete it from their machine. I can't imagine why one would go to the trouble to delete it as it isn't particularly large and can be turned off as the default pix viewer quite easily. Regardless, the camera raw updates Apple pushes out fairly regularly will install on any currently supported version of OS X which I think still includes Snow Leopard.

I'm asking for a work around not to be told something I clearly have the ability of reading on my own or have further prior knowledge on specifics.
Also, the reason people wouldn't want iPhoto is simple. It sucks. It also hogs resources on clean running work machines. I don't drive around with extra weight in my car because I simply can.

Correct, I'm looking for a work around for machines that don't use iPhoto. iPhoto and Aperture are catalysts for the update essentially. If the update stays after the install and removal of iPhoto I will purchase it for my multiple work machines.

At the risk of getting into a pissing match, please note that the two KB articles referenced do not support your claim. The first simply says that it doesn't support earlier versions of Aperture or iPhoto. The second link notes the cameras support and once again says that it won't work with any earlier versions of Aperture or iPhoto. I realize it says required, but in Apple speak that simply means if you want to use the RAW update your Aperture and iPhoto must be at a certain level.
As I noted Apple's camera RAW is a system level utility that is used by a variety of built in programs, most notably Preview. Please note that no mention is made of a Preview version in the announcement.
You've gotten very hostile when provided with information that solves your problem so there isn't much I can do to help you other than to note (1) iPhoto is installed with every version of OS X (as is Preview). (2) It never has to be used. (3) It can be removed from the system with a tool like Appcleaner if you wish to do so. (4) The presence of iPhoto has no baring on any other photo viewing or editing tool. I don't understand your distaste for iPhoto. It is completely inert unless you invoke it. (5) Finally, I removed iPhoto from a Mac Air with a tiny SSD (128 GB) some time ago and RAW updates have never noticed or mentioned its absence.
If you really want to know if it works, delete iPhoto and install the update. It won't harm anything. All the Apple KB articles are saying is IF you use iPhoto or Aperture they must be updated to the versions indicated. Nothing in the article claims you have to have the programs. Proof? Many people run their machines without Aperture and the RAW updates work fine. By your logic (?) you would have to have both programs installed (at proper versions) to do the RAW update. This is manifestly not true. If you want to get angry when offered a clearer explanation of Apple's verbiage feel free, but that doesn't make your interpretation correct.
As I said, install if for yourself and there will be no need for further discussion.

Yep! The Apple Camera RAW package is under the lic. as part of the OS only. That other apps use it and that other dependancies may exist isn't really important if you don't have those apps. The Update linked to above is available for all 10.8.5 users and above.
