p.6 #1 · Tamrons Response To AI Servo Issue.

nctemper wrote:
Can any 1DX owner confirm on this?

YES

I experienced the same problem with the 150-600 on my DX
mentioned by Imagemaster

" in AI Servo, in the 450-600mm range, and with the shutter button held half-depressed as they focus on a distant subject then swing to focus on a nearer subject."

I returned that lens

Maybe with all the copies being returned, Tamron will realize the scope of the problem.

Well if you have been doing that all the time, you don't even need AI Servo. You can do that in One Shot mode.

How would that help to track the new moving subject? Oh wait it wouldn't!

Thanks everyone . I have the 7 D and won't have the money till middle of next month .
Probably not an issue , but people having trouble with AI servo - what version software are you using ?
I am still on version 1 something - after all the problems with version 2 , the update to 2 + did not seem worth it .

________

I might add "to track subjects moving sideways (and give a general idea of what the scene looks like, although it seems the overwhelming consensus is about BIF)"

This really is disappointing, and the evidence keeps piling up.

Too bad. Even though I'd apparently be unaffected with a 6D, I really don't like to purchase from more companies with flippant attitudes than absolutely necessary. Canon will suffice in that regard!

I will however let them know my attitudes towards purchasing their lens. I already burned through 4 copies of bad 70-300's, and I think I got a good one by pure chance. 1 Tamron is enough for me, I prefer not fighting to get a decent product. And then wonder if it will function on whatever new body I decide to purchase in the future. This is exactly why so many people steer clear of 3rd party lenses.

Here's hoping that Sigma has something new waiting in the wings if Canon doesn't.

Good luck to those who are past their return window. It'd be a hoot if B&H decided to stop carrying it because of returns!

I went thru 3 18-55's [ non IS ] 2 50 1.4's and at 1.4 the AF is iffy . I did buy the 18-55 IS - it works OK .
I will get the 150-600 and see for myself - If it does not do what I want , it will go back , but most of shots posted here that people complain about look OK to me .
I judge more by printed shot than by what I see on screen .
Most of the shots I print for me , I put in a frame and within a week or 2 the wife wants a print of this relative or that wedding , party / event - so my shot goes in to a plastic sleeve in a note book .
I douth many people will be using the lens to sell shots - most will be like me , for personal use only . Maybe print 1 in a thousand , but label and save 95 % just because .
I have the 70-300 , 135-400 , 35-350 and the 70-200 mk II - combine them all and they get maybe 5 to 10 % time on camera .

Lurked [occasionally] for a long time so here is my first post so please excuse my ignorance as I just take pictures and do not usually follow forums closely. My 6D works for me and 90% of my pictures are of moving subjects and sport so I probably don't know anything as it is seemingly not capable of coping with these subjects according to many experts. ...

Could it be that the Tamron 150-600 using AI servo works with Digic 5 but nothing earlier?

Really interested in this lens and would like to know if it could be used on the 500D and 60D I have as backup bodies.

I don't know about the 500D and 60D . I have the 7D and XTI [ 400 D ] so have not paid much attension to other bodies .
Tamron buys a liesence from canon , so should should be OK on all EOS bodies .
I would say most of the people who have the lens are better off than the rest of us and have FF bodies and maybe a crop .
If you are right , this might be a case of the body being more important than glass . Canon has already done this with the 2 X III and the 1,4 III extenders - they work best on II lenses . The 24-105 is another example works better on a FF than a crop .
Please post any questions you have , It will at least get someone thinking .

Nope. Just a man of few words. Not bitching, just trying to help out any way I can is all.

BTW. Own both the 500mm f4LIS and 300mm f2.8LIS, so why would I want two. Just wanted to play with the new Tamron is all.

That's cool.

It is a 1K lens and you had like 6 posts when I read it.

BTW, I've seen some results from this Tammy that are truly outstanding. Let's hope they fix what is needed by April which is the next batch date.

Article referenced dates back to at least 2003. I would not be surprised if things have,or have not, changed in 11 years of business.

jjbird sent his 7D and lens in a week ago, was hoping to maybe hear something by now but hopefully they are really trying to figure this out and are putting it through its paces! I wanted this lens to work out as I don't see a Big White in my future any time soon

This may not be a Tamron problem. It may be a Canon problem. I quite often have the same problem as described in AI Servo with my 7D with a Canon 500 mm f/4 (original) when using it with a Canon 1.4X Mk II TC.

Why would it be a Canon problem? I have never had the same problem with any Canon body, from 20D, 40D, 7D, and all 1D-series bodies with any Canon lens, and that includes the 500 f4.5, 500 f4, and 500 f4 II, even when using a 1.4x TC.

IMO the 7D has very quirky AF and as Forrest Gump's mama said, "it's AF is like a box of chocolates, and you never know what your gonna get". One minute it can be in the sweet zone and can't miss, the next is can't AF for shit.

It had me tearing my hair out sometimes. Nails difficult shots, misses dead easy ones. Brilliant IQ one minute, nice and clean at ISO 1600, then next shot, full of noise at ISO 400. It hates backlighting that's for sure.

What is the data? How many are reported being returned for this issue?
