Lets all give Mr. Simonetti a nice call this AM and let him know his lens doesn't focus in AI Servo on the Canon EOS 7D, 1D4 and possibly a few other bodies I would but since I don't own the lens I don't think I should, hopefully you owners will give the guy a call and at least leave him a voicemail.

I called B&H, where my lens was purchased, and this is the reply the customer service rep got from Tamron:
Thank you for holding. I just spoke with tech support at Tamron at Tel: 631-858-8400 and they told me they had tested the lens extensively before releasing it and also tested it again when they saw these posts on forums. They said that according to their tests with many different camera bodies it does work on Ai Servo mode. They said that Ai Servo mode can be tricky at times to get any lens to focus as it has several setting to be placed in, but that it does work in Ai Servo mode. That is the information Tamron just gave me on the phone. We at B&H have not had a chance to try the product and see how it performs in Ai Servo mode unfortunately.
I have a RMA to return the lens - not good enough photographer to hamper my attempts at wildlife by having to use tricks to trick the lens into working....Show more →
Hmm, I guess they do read the boards. I wonder how much this stance is going to cost them. Wow, this is a really good business lesson for everyone reading.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread but this is the response I got from Tamron.
Dear Mr. Richardson,
Thank you for the purchase of our Tamron 150-600mm lens.If you are experiencing difficulties with your lens we would be happy to take a look at it and take care of it under our 6 year warranty. Or as you mentioned, the item can still be returned to B & H under their terms in exchange for another lens.
To date I am not aware of any problem or defect with the lens that would not allow it to focus using the AI servo mode.
I have used our 150-600mm in a variety of situations as have many others and personally I am pleased with the performance including the Ai servo auto focus.
If you choose to send the lens here for service please let me know as I can be your direct contact through the evaluation process.
If you have the time I would like to hear more about how you are shooting. What camera body, camera settings, lens settings, shooting conditions such as available light…..and so on.
Thank you in advance,
Pat Simonetti

It sounds like they mean well but the way it's focusing is fine with them and they don't know what to do to make it better.
This Pat Simonetti would probably rather I hadn't put his or her name and address on the forum but if they haven't heard of a problem maybe it's time they did....Show more →
I hope you will reply to him and give him the link to this thread. You could ask him specifically why people are having these problems with the 7D, 1D4 and other older models, but not with the newer models. And you could ask him what specific bodies he tried it on.

Since they have replied to you, perhaps you could ask B&H to test the lens on a 7D or 1D4. I'm sure they have a few around.
One needs to be very specific in the communication. It is not enough to say that it doesn't work in servo mode. One needs to say that is doesn't TRACK SUBJECTS MOVING TOWARDS YOU OR AWAY FROM YOU in servo mode. Any person may set the camera to AI servo, focus on a stationary subject, and conclude that "It works in servo mode". When you get replies, reply back and make this clear.

Tony,
Do you think this thread or your thread "Sequential Shooting only @ 600mm" be better to send Pat Simonetti" to read?

Have been talking to Tamron for over two weeks on this Aiservo issue and the fact it does or does not work on certain canon bodies. Yesterday I sent them the lens and my 7D, so I am hopeful they will now experience the issue first hand from a registered owner. I have shot well over 1500 BIF images with my Canon 6D body and have had good results using Aiservo. Some of these are posted on my website. http://jjbird.smugmug.com/Photography/Tamron-150600-Lens/i-GKtJqV8
There dealings with me have been vary professional, and I sure hope this will be resolved as I really like this lens.

I tested my 6D with the 150-600 from the same spot (shooting out my 3rd floor office window towards an interstate) and I can report the Tamron seems very good with the 6D in all AI Servo conditions in which the 7D fails. In fact, I tried the same test using the 6D with a Kenko 1.4TC, and the 6D was still significantly better at tracking from car to car than my 7D with the Tamron! All those FPS and AF points on the 7D don't mean anything if the lens isn't tracking things correctly.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised how well the 6D did with the Tamron and the 1.4TC. Granted, it's sunny here today and I'm tracking cars/trucks, not birds like many will do, but still....
Update: Tamron Japan Customer Service has responded to my email, asking for further details, which I did. I also suggested they test the lens on a 7D & 1D Mk IV, in AI Servo, in the 450-600mm range, and with the shutter button held half-depressed as they focus on a distant subject then swing to focus on a nearer subject.
I experienced the same problem with the 150-600 on my DX

I have to say, that I'm sure that I have always done the "hit AF button again, when acquiring new subject" thing automatically. This is probably where I have been going wrong all this time I don't think I have ever kept the AF activated whilst moving from a far subject to a near subject. Maybe this lens will work for me after all...

Well if you have been doing that all the time, you don't even need AI Servo. You can do that in One Shot mode.
