I have no issues with AF tracking on the 100-400 with 1.4TCIII on the 5D3. Proof is in the pudding. These aren't edited just pulled them off a LR metadata search
These are excellent! So I should just keep trying )

I was really pulling for this lens to be a good BIF tracker as I was thinking of upgrading to a 5DIII so I could still get close to the reach I have with my 7D & 400L 5.6!
arbitrage you may be right on the Nikon version as its a later release and maybe they have time to work the bugs out! Time will tell....

And if the Nikon doesn't have the issues then the Canon will have the fix for it You think Tamron is going to have one working and one not.......
Actually I do think that is going to happen.....however if the rumours that none are shipping to dealers anymore for the Canon are true (based on a lens rental company saying they won't have it till end of month) then I think they may already be working on it. When is the Nikon supposed to be coming out?

It will be interesting to see how Tamron proceeds with your issue.
I will never know, since I have returned it to my dealer for a refund. I was not prepared to wait for weeks or months without a replacement while Tamron examined the lens to find the issue.

I fill your pain, all you can do now is wait to see how Tamron proceeds with the many complaints about the AF.. If they work it out, you can always repurchase it.
There's no way anyone is telling me that they did not see these issues in beta testing and not correct them.

First of all, I haven't shot birds in over a year but wanted to test out the Tamron I picked up last weekend using AI Servo on 1Dx. I am used to working on a 500mm f/4 IS, 100-400, 300 f/2.8 and also owned a 400 f/5.6 so I am quite familiar with using superteles. These are gulls so they aren't really the swiftest birds around but I guess it's good enough to test.
I was working with fading light late this afternoon. All shots were handheld.
Some observations:
1) Focusing is best with excellent contrast.
2) All shots were single focus with four surround assist focusing.
3) All shots were focused on the head and I followed focus.
4) Canon would probably have faster focusing but for the versatility of the lens, this is a welcome change.
5) Color definition is definitely better for the Canon superteles but for the money there is not much to complain about.
There is no sharpening except for the Lightroom default of 25. I bumped up the exposure since some of the shots were a bit underexposed and so it is easier for folks to see the shot. If you want to see more sequences than the five I've posted, you can go to my link below. I believe there was one sequence where I shot nine frames total. These are 100% cropped.

I would expect the Tamron to produce comparable BIF shots as these:
How can you expect that type of performance from a zoom vs. a prime? The cost of the lens itself is already several times more for the 500 plus the portability of the 150-600mm lens. I would like to say that's an unreasonable expectation. :-)
