p.1 #1 · Sony A7/r next firmware wishlist

Sorry to open yet another A7/r thread, but I think a dedicated thread may get more attention from Sony.

If we were to write a letter to Sony to ask for more functions in the next firmware, what would you request?

I'll start:

1. Shortcut to focus magnification w/o having to go through that focus square
2. More customization in playback

Main thing I'd like is for the menus to be cleaned up and an option to build a custom menu or hide items I'll never use. Another thing that would be nice is some improved customization of the image playback controls, which IMO are a total mess right now. You have to zoom into 100% (if not beyond?) using a hard to reach button and only then can you zoom out incrementally? Who designed that?

We'll see if a fw update happens... I know some people like to say that Fuji wouldn't release so many updates if they didn't ship cameras with 'beta' firmware, but here is yet another example of the wrongheadedness of that line of thinking.

Forget it.

There were many wishlists for NEX-7 firmware, but Sony didn't care...

1. Image zoom needs simplification
2. sensitivity of buttons needs to be tweaked (shutter release and dial)
3. Startup time reduced
4. better customization of menus and options to turn off unused items
5. quieter shutter (a7R)
6. Option to completely turn off LCD (not just turn display black)
7. Option for EVF only w/ image review remaining on LCD + button to toggle between LCD/EVF/AUTO
8. Better power management

Allow IR remote shutter release (or Remote Camera app shutter release) when using MF assist in magnified view. This feature was quite useful for tripod work with NEX cameras, and I'm not sure why it's been disabled.

Don't know if it is possible but faster shutter lag and wake-from-sleep seem to be the issues I have had reported to me. Won't get mine until later this week though so this is just shooting the breeze right now for me

My only big request is to completely turn off the rear screen INCLUDING the backlight. As it stands now you can shut the back display off, but the back lighting stays on. It should be an easy fw fix to completely turn the back screen off, instead of just blanking it.

Setting choices are Auto, Monitor, Viewfinder.

Changes I'd like...
Focus zoom in one button press like NEX-7.
Playback like NEX-7, press center button to zoom in, rear wheel to zoom in and out by turning it, left right up and down by pressing in that direction.
Map C2(or other button) to toggle Monitor & EVF.
I'd still love to have more control on what and where things are displayed.

Edit: Add minimum shutter speed to PASM modes.
Manual lens data entry, room for at least 10 lenses.

biggest things for me would be to "use LCD like on a real DSLR" (only for chimping), quicker MF/mag (instead of showing the zoom box first! wtf?), Map one of the C buttons to toggle VF/LCD display.

Other than that, i'm quite happy.
Maybe let me control mic settings from modes other than video? That seems stupid.

1. Manual lens data entry. I am astonished that no one but Nikon has implemented this incredibly useful feature.

2. Major work is needed on power management, start-up/wake-from-sleep times, and lag when changing settings.

3. Playback mode needs same robust button customization as Shooting mode.

4. Shutter & Aperture values need to be adjustable by whole stops in addition to the current third and half.

5. ISO values need to be adjustable by half stops in addition to the current third and (sorta) whole.

6. Exposure compensation needs to be adjustable by half and whole stops in addition to the current third.

7. Items 4, 5, and 6 should all be "linked" (adjusted by one setting).

Number one request is to be able to toggle between viewfinder, monitor, auto via a custom button.

But I agree, image playback is all messed up now.

I'd love to be able to customize the center button to do review magnification same as the NEX rather than having to use c2 which is hard to reach. Also dial to zoom in and out.

No flashing F-stop indicator when using manual lenses.

NP,
That's about how I'd want it, and a quick button press to enable the LCD for low angle stuff...

I totally agree on the custom lens entry. I would use it religiously.

The half-stop thing is a conundrum. I set my camera to half stops, then realized that it would only affect some of the settings, but not others, and switched it back.

Battery life is awful. Some people do not care, since they can charge every night, but for travelling, battery management has the potential to be a real problem.

Carsten,

For travel via a car I bring a DC to AC inverter and plug in batteries and chargers and charge batteries as I drive. If staying in a place overnight where batteries can be plugged in I would probably carry 2? chargers, the camera and extra batteries to charge. Right now I have 3 extra batteries. But, if I were to be gone for some time I would probably get 2 possibly 3 more batteries. The biggest problem though would be if you can not charge batteries at all for an extended period.

I'm not seeing the problem with the double tap to focus confirm, but if they make an option:
1: select zoom area first.
2: jump to 7x.
3: 7x on most in focus face.

To me the current behavior, if its like that A99 is really useful for concerts and other situations when I want something in focus but I really want to preserve my framing.

The EVF/rear screen seems like a bug, the A99 has a hardware switch that turns off the rear screen when its stowed I think this one will get a fix.
