Actually RAW files are highly compressable, but compressing photos in-camera on the fly, before saving to the memory card, requires a very fast processor in order not to affect shutter lag or continuous shooting perfromance too much.

I think the RAW files are indeed losslessly compressed in the A7/r. My guess is Sony's fast processor can afford to compress the RAW files in-camera, while the Nikon D800 can't.

Nonsense. They're compressed and 'lossless' is a marketing term.

Thus, nearly the same file size. The compromise is on Sony's end - an algorithm that makes a shortcut of having a larger/faster processor that can process 14 bit depth files.

Yes. There are solutions, but why is there a problem. The Nikon Df gets 1800 shots per battery, why does the A7/R get 300 with the display off?

I keep 3 spares fully charged in my bag. Each one has 1-3 dots on it so I rotate them to be used equally. (Same as I do with high capacity mags to prevent springs from become set/compressed).

On board charging is OK but seems that it shouldn't have been a big deal to provide a charger as the NEXs had.

I rarely shoot more than 300 shots in a day and that's in interesting places. (Istanbul, Paris, Copenhagen, Prague, etc). Most drudging around Amerika is 20-50 shots in a day.

why does it have to be nonsense? you can compress a .txt file without losing any information, why wouldn't you be able to do so with a picture?

no! lossless is not a marketing term! lossless compression means that when the file is decompressed it is identical in every way to the original uncompressed raw. the identical information can be encoded in many different ways. i could have typed this post in morse code and it would have been much longer, that doesn't mean it would contain any additional information.

that said, as far as i know sony has admitted that they use a lossy compression algorithm. that doesn't imply that you would be able to tell the difference between the same image processed from an uncompressed raw and from one compressed using their lossy algorithm. it really depends on how good their algorithm is.

Try shooting a starry night and see if the Sony algorithm doesn't result in posterization and IQ degradation.

If there is missing information it isn't 'lossless' - it is lossy

0-800 contains 801 unique values (ie is continuous)
801-1424 contains 320 unique values (skips 1 out of every 2)
1424-1427 contains one unique value (skips 2 of 3)
1428-2023 contains 149 unique values (skips 3 of 4)
2024-2029 contains one unique value (skips 5 of 6)
2030-4093 contains 258 unique values (skips of 8)

Main thing I'd like is for the menus to be cleaned up and an option to build a custom menu or hide items I'll never use. Another thing that would be nice is some improved customization of the image playback controls, which IMO are a total mess right now. You have to zoom into 100% (if not beyond?) using a hard to reach button and only then can you zoom out incrementally? Who designed that?

We'll see if a fw update happens... I know some people like to say that Fuji wouldn't release so many updates if they didn't ship cameras

+1 for a custom menu option. To me it's not essential but if I could put a few often accessed options in there, I'd be happy rather than buzzing through the menus.

Other than that I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

Maybe a bit OT, but here's a link to some good info re the lossy vs lossless and 13 vs 14 bit A7R raw question:

There's a great explanation of how Sony's compression algorithm works over here:

I want the RAW-files to be 100% RAW. Not compressed and lossy.

The files from the 36MP D800 / D800E, are 60 - 70mb.
The files from the A7R are 37mb.

Hmm.

And no, I probably wouldn't be able to spot the difference.. My desire for uncompressed RAW-files is just a "peace of mind thing".

In aperture and shutter priority I'd like to see the option of assigning FEC to one of the command dials instead of them both doing the same thing.

LCD truely OFF would be nice.

Zoom on playback to centre of rear wheel and wheel to zoom in/out.

Single touch focus magnification.

Other than that I'm pretty happy.

The A7/r does NOT have a faster processor than the D800. Not even in the same ballpark (or solar system). Compare start-up, wake-from-sleep, open-playback-mode, or even change-shutterspeed times between these two cameras. This is the #1 area Sony cheaped out on these cameras.

I second this, give me whole stop "detentes" as an option, just like Canon does. The more I use the Sony, the more I value much of Canon's tried-and-true menu system, custom functions, etc.

I still remember the three CFs that were crucial for my EOS-1N:

CF3 to leave the film leader out after rewinding
CF4 for back-button focus
CF12 for mirror lock-up

The sensor in this thing (A7R) is a beast. This is one deep camera. A touchscreen would have been nice, as on the EOS-M. But, that's not firmware.

1. Focus Magnifier / Zoom in one button press like NEX. An additional menu option would be to have the option to change the behavior of the one click, where one click can equal any of these 3 user pref. Maximum magnification first, Minimum magnification first or the current style framing mode.

2. Startup times need improved to feel like a pro tool. Currently the camera is inconsistent here. Agreed that major work is needed on power management, start-up/wake-from-sleep times, and lag when changing settings.

3. Buggy system. For example, when ISO is mapped to default wheel location, sometimes it simply does not work when wheel is turned. This is not acceptable, as I’ve had to map a backup button for ISO for when this bug happens. It happens often.

4. Fix the auto sensor so that it doesn't mistake the shirt/belly as an eyeball and switch to the viewfinder...even though one is shooting with the screen. An option to adjust the sensitivity of the back screen in proximity to the body/eye before switching would be nice.

5. Option to completely turn off LCD (not just turn display black
INCLUDING the backlight.)

6. Manual lens data entry, room for at least 10 lenses.

1. Add ability to set minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO mode.
2. Lossless compression for raws.
