p.4 #1 · Who's Got Olympus on Sony A7/A7R Images ???

I'm really excited about the OM lenses. But there is a big hole in the lineup at 35 mm, which is where I want to shoot mostly. I think I'll try the OM 35/2 despite it not being too well regarded. After all, I tend to have a different taste than most other photographers (at least here). The OM 35/2.8 gives colors to die for, but it's too slow.

I own a late copy of the OM 35/2 and I think it's an underrated lens for sure. I just finished doing some infinity test shots on both my 6D and Nex-7 speedbooster that included this lens that I'll try to add to the Speedbooster thread in a few days. The 6D shots should be pretty indicative of what you would expect on an A7.

I liked the Novoflex anodized finish which is clearly different from most (all?) cheap adapters. The Metabones chromed surfaces give a good feeling when switching lenses. If the chrome wears off a little in a couple of years isn't a problem. In this case it's academic as Metabones doesn't make an OM-->Nex adapter.

I'm sorry to hear about the m Rokkor 40/2 and the veiling flare at f/2. There are two versions of the lens, the later is multicoated and perhaps better (or is that the one you have?). The later model has the serial number on the lens body, the early model has it on the front plate.

The Voigtländer 40/1.4 is not for me; the zone B dip would annoy me all the time. Also, the bokeh is too harsh for me but that's more personal I think. I have owned the Zuiko 35/2. It's a pretty big lens compared to the rangefinder lenses. My copy was, simply put, too soft. But opinions are opinions... you can try it and let us know what you think?

EDIT: Seeing Tarocco's reply make me think about sample differences, or individual preferences of course.

What do you think about the M Rokkor 40/2 now. Is it still a favourite? I ask as the focal length is right for me and I like the size of the lens of course. The Zuiko 50/2 Macro is a bit big with the adapter. I'm going off topic here, sorry for that, but hope it is OK to ask you if you got any R0kkor 40/2 images on-line?

For now I think I'll just buy a couple of cheapo OM-->Nex adapters and hope one of them is OK for the 24mm and the Macro.

Jonas - I recently bought the M Rokkor 40/2 and really like it on my NEX-5N. I get my a7R tomorrow and can't wait to use this lens on that body. Mine is the multi-coated CLE version. I'll be certain to post in one of these threads! I also have a 21/3.5. Both were purchased in anticipation of getting the a7R.

The first or second version? And please, post some high contrast wide open images if possible. Maybe in the rangefinder thread not to disturb this one too much... Thank you!

won't make a difference, the f/2 glow is result of SA not internal reflections due to poor coatings. it's nice for portraits at f/2 with the "leica glow", but if you want high contrast and biting sharpness you've got to stop down to f/2.8 on all versions of the lens.

back on topic (sorta), has anyone shot with both the cv 21/1.8 and the OM 21/2? i'd be curious to hear how they compare since they're roughly the same price and size when mounted on an a7.

Nothing to be sorry about and it's definitely not about the coating. It would be stupid to expect such a small and fast lens to give good sharpness across the frame wide open. I really like its character and I will use it as a walkaround lens when I can stop down a tad. But not wide open at night (or swedish afternoon at this time of year, as you know).

The Voigtländer 40/1.4 is not for me; the zone B dip would annoy me all the time. Also, the bokeh is too harsh for me but that's more personal I think.

From the few shots I got this far, I agree about the dip, but I don't mind the bokeh at all. It's like any ~35-50/2 old RF lens, if not even better. Contrast and flare resistance is awesome. And.... I like it a lot more than the CV 35/1.2!

I have owned the Zuiko 35/2. It's a pretty big lens compared to the rangefinder lenses. My copy was, simply put, too soft. But opinions are opinions... you can try it and let us know what you think?

I don't mind softness if it looks good. But I want reasonably uniform performance across the frame, except for the corners. Many of my favourite lenses do "glow" wide open, in a nice way. If the OM 35/2 is even close to the OM 28/2, I will probably love it.

Mine is the second version. Just found out I don't get the a7R till Friday.

I took these to test for flare and my copy of 21/3.5 is well controlled. The later multi-coating might have made a difference.
Regret selling the 16/3.5 and 18/3.5. These would have been very handy on the A7.
The EVF is vey useful for occasions when you need to shoot into the sun.
Since OM lenses are lightweight, I have bought big_is adapters. Also saved some $ due to its lower cost.

You might also try the very cheap Nikkor 35/2.8, which is much better than I expected, or the Nikkor 35/2, which is meant to be better, in case that OM doesn't work out.

That actually might be a good option. I don't recall seeing any pics with the 35/1.4 AI-S yet which may (or may not) be a good performer....

I took some shots but it looks like my cheapo ebay adapter is crap, I think it is focussing past infinity. I stuck it on f/8 and went to the infinity hard stop and nothing is in focus at 1/200 handheld.

I got my FE35 yesterday, its ridiculously light, I love it already.

Derek - I agree with you about the "glow" with faster OM glass. I have a 28/2 and is certainly is glowy WO. Stopped down, it is decent but not exceptional. But, for the price, it is a very good bargain and also handles well.

That's better than not even reaching infinity! My FD-->NEX adapter does this too, but not a huge deal with live view and zoom.

I love the FE35 too, but a bit disappointed in some faint color casting on the corners on the A7R, even at f/8. Granted, this was worst case scenario (snow and grey clouds) but still... For $700 I didn't want color casts! But it's still a great lens.

Don't forget the often overlooked Contax C/Y 35/2.8

(Sorry, keep forgetting this is an OM-only thread)

@sebboh and Makten; thank you for elaborating on the M Rokkor 40/2. If it's SA the coating doesn't matter. I's still interested in the lens as it seems OK from f/2.8 and is small and nice.
But really, if it is that damn hard to find a reasonably fast and good 35-45 mm lens I'll just use my RX1 for that and the A7 for other focal lengths and needs.

@anyone interested: I have just taken a few test shots with the A7 and the Olympus Pen F 60/1.5. That's a cool little lens, initially test says a) fully usable wide open with b) little of the SA seen from most other Olympus Pen lenses unless stopped down and c) the lens vignettes unless stopped down but it covers the sensor and d) I'll have yo check this out further but e) there is a snow storm outside so I'm not sure what I can get except for indoor test images at the moment.

I can edit this post later if anyone is interested in this lens.

Lol, we'll see what the monochrome street lamps here can tell us... But you are right; always look at the bright sides of life! Here I was, thinking it is a good time for a whisky. I have a day off from work tomorrow and I think I'll skip my plans which included a walkabout.

Sorry if I missed it, but what adapters are recommended? Novoflex OM to Nex? Didn't Roger user try them in his adapter tests that turned out surprisingly lousy but for unclear reasons?
I do like the tripod mount option though.
