A7r shutter noise = RX1 poor IQ at infinity

The RX1 has a floating lens group and is excellent at both infinity and close up. If you haven't found that to be the case, then you must have either had a bad copy or focus was off.

I suspect Philip is suggesting that the sound of the A7r shutter is a non-issue, just as RX1 poor infinity IQ turned out to be false once that camera found it's way into the hands of competent photographers. So, does the A7r have a built in sensor which quietens the shutter when it it senses a competent photographer is behind the lens?

Sorry douglas, my bad - I forget Aussie style sarcasm is still often an 'oops too far' issue. What I am driving at is the tendency people rightly put in to identify and discuss the behaviour of cameras before the facts are full known and so the discussions can get out of perspective, and becomes a 'meme'.

My RX1 is great at infinity like every other one is, most likely..and the a7r shutter noise will 'become acceptable' in a very short time too, as people get used a small camera that looks like an RX1 with a pentaprism/grip but with a DSLR level shutter sound.

I think we all do it at times - I was genuinely surprised to see the controls of the Nikon FX and said so, perhaps unwisely, before realising that the camera can/will be operated without using the olde worlde dials and their locks.

But that RX1 shutter is very special, it reminds me of the Hexar AF (a movie still camera) in silent mode.

Don't apologize. It's my fault, and I answered quickly without realizing who posted it.

philip, you're gonna love this:

As is the slow start-up time.

Some reviewers have reported a 2-3 seconds startup time with tha A7r. The slow startup only happens if you turn the camera on immediately after you turn it off. Like it is done in stupid tests. Leave the camera off for some seconds, and it will give you an image in in the viewfinder and allow you tyo take a photo in less than one second, consistently.

Gotta take my new A7r out for some photos tomorrow

I wonder if having the Sony grip on will help dampen some vibrations. Also will there be a (usb) tethered shutter release that will come out or does Sony Alpha/Nex line have one already.

I believe the only remote shutter is infrared and wifi.

I have no A7r yet, but I have this scheduled for delivery on Saturday:

Thanks Rich,

That's what I'm looking for, a7r shipped already so might look for it local.

A user on dpreview is reporting blurry images when using IS on a Canon lens with the A7R + Metabones adapter. He doesn't see the problem using the same adapter+lens on his NEX-7. Does anyone have an A7R + metabones + Canon IS lens to try this with?

I believe there is a Sony wired remote control that uses the multi terminal. It works with the NEX 6 and should work with the A7/r.

Jim Kasson has done his usual thoughtful and thorough examination of the shutter vibration issue with the A7r. Read the top two posts in his blog:

http://blog.kasson.com/

The bottom line for those who don't want to click through and read his posts:

"Except for critical testing, I personally won’t worry about shutter-induced vibration on the a7R with the camera mounted directly to the tripod and lenses of 135mm or shorter."

Thanks Jim!!

This is anything but a scientific test, but I am posting one of my images taken just before sunset on December 4 at Lock Ridge Park near Alburtis, PA. The image was taken with my tripod mounted A7r with a Novoflex Leica R to NEX adapter and Novoflex ASTAT-NEX rotating collar and my Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo Macro Elmarit at ISO 100, f5.6 for 1/3 sec. Image was processed with a little sharpening in LR5.3RC I did make all kinds of adjustment with the image to present how I wanted the image to look.

The first image has been reduced to a JPEG and the second is a JPEG from a 100% crop of the leaves below the red berries near the upper left third of the full image. I was also concerned about wind moving the leaves and the branch when I took the image.

I am not sure of the magnification of the images, but I do not see any evidence of any vibration or wind in the two images.

Rich

Do you have any around 1/15s with a 180-200mm lens?

The RMT-DSLR2 should be a lot cheaper, and has the 2s release.

Carsten,

Not yet. I only got out on Wednesday afternoon to take some photos. It has been rather nasty and/or rainy for the last 2 days. I may be able to get out over the weekend.

I don't have the image any more, but FWIW, I took an image using the 70-200/2.8 L IS ver.2 on a Metabones III adapter at 200mm focusing on a coffee cup across the room (about 35 ft.). I used AF. The cup had the equivalent of 10-12 pt text. When zoomed in all the way (on the LCD), the image looked tack sharp. There was no evidence of vibration. I'll see if I can duplicate the shot.

My tests on the A7 with 300mm and TC1.4 showed significant vibration (Gitzo GT3542XLS, Burzynski Ball Head II). The A7R would show vibration sooner. Maybe your 280/4 might show something. I don't yet know how far from 1/15s the vibration shows up.

Shutter speed is important. Try to get a 1/15s shot, if possible.

Carsten,

I am hoping to try my 280mm f4 Apo Telyt. But, the Leica Support and Rotating Collars are different and supposedly better than the Nikon. I am quite aware of 1/15 of a second having been a bad shutter speed for long lenses in particular in our film days.

In my case, my tripod is the RRS TVC-24L Versa Series 2 Tripod with TA-2-LC: Versa 2 Leveling Base w/ clamp, RRS TH-DVTL-55: Round Dovetail Plate, and Markins M20 Ball head with Kirk Arca Swiss Type QR clamp.
