My previous copy of the 16-35mm lens was badly decentered. I simply couldn't get the left side to be sharp at any aperture. Since it couldn't be adjusted, Sony replaced that with a brand new one and the new copy delivers. What a difference between the two copies and now, finally, I can share the enthusiasm for this lens. Here are two test shots and yes, the aperture was stopped down to get an extended depth-of-field but it performs fine wide open as well.
I tried out some focus tracking as well. I found that AF-C in "wide area" was the most effective. It's not going to compare to the best DSLR's, but can get the job done.

Well earned my friend, those would be right at home on a postcard.
Thank you, thank you!
Here are 2 additional images using the same lens but stopped down only to f/5.6 and at closer focusing distance than the previous 2 on the previous page. Yes, I am now pleased with the performance of this lens .
The day before yesterday I received the Sony 28-70, since I need an autofocus lens (for when walking with the baby), and I wanted to try the A7's native AF. We had a nice walk and I think I can say that I'll be using it some. Definitely needs a lot more postprocessing than primes, but it's ok, I guess. Some photos:
