From a recent shoot at Red Rock Canyon State Park. Used my Sony A7s with 55mm f/1.8 ZA, three Yongnuo YN-560II flashes through an umbrella and controlled with Yongnuo YN560TX on camera. Also used a 3-stop B+W ND filter to get my shutter speed down since I shot this during late morning sun.
Feedback always welcomed. Thanks.
You asked for feedback right
I love the first one in particular however there are two issues for me :-
a) The pop from shooting WO (I assume) is so much that they are totally detached from the BG. So much so that it no longer looks natural - almost as if it is a canvas backdrop. A little more DoF (maybe f4) would have cured that (and this coming from a short DoF freak) !
b) The little girl's eyes are looking too far away from the camera (in both shots) that you can no longer see their full shape and this means no specular highlights in her eyes.

Appreciate the feedback Frogfish. I've gotten that comment from several non-photogs about the background, but it's usually positive. Next time I'll stop down and get a little more detail in the background to see how that works.
You know, I've thought about the same thing on the girl shot, and wished I had taken more shots. I'm really just starting out with portrait photography and learning each time with feedback. Thanks so much.
Thank you Gregg!
Really like your macro shots of autumn leaves - funky!
This afternoon I came across this unique tree but no matter what angle I chose the background was too busy with no subject --> background separation.
Shooting WO and post processing the life out of it makes it more appealing, but still I would hope the tree was against sands or prairies.

Good morning.
Because you have asked for feedback, I will offer some:
first of all, I appreciate how you set up the lighting with the umbrella and the flashes and the neutral density filter because the lighting is spot on in both of these images.
However, in the first image the mountain range in the background which is purposely out of focus has an exaggerated chromatic aberration above, which cuts right through the neck line of your beautiful subject and is a bit distracting.
In the second image, again, the lighting is wonderful and there are two beautiful subjects. However, because of the way you've taken the picture the perspective of the young man on the right side of the image already being a larger human than the beautiful girl on the left side of the image makes it look as if he is 10 times bigger, or that she is a doll sitting on his lap.
So, the lighting is wonderful and your subjects are handsome and beautiful. My critique is with the out of focus mountain range through the neck of the girl in the first image and the angle at which you took the second image.
Again, I only offer this critique because you asked.
Thank you for telling us about your lighting set up as it worked very well.
I'm finding that my A7 is producing really bright vivid colours. Too vivid in terms of reds, magenta, and purples. This is in raw and is quite annoying to correct.
