I took the GM 300mm to the local falcon site yesterday morning. From the get go, I anticipated that I would need either the 1.4X or 2X TC. First, I put the 1.4X TC first. Just a few minutes upon arriving, the female peregrine falcon showed up on the perch. I was about to change the TC to the 2X but before I could finish that, it took off. Oh, well... It stayed away from the perch for the rest of my stay... Oh, well. About an hour or so later though, a ground squirrel stole the show 😎. Since I came to try out the lens with TC, I took a few shots.

Lovely bokeh, Joshua. Had you flipped the order of squirrel vs falcon, I might have imagined one ate the other. 🙂

Jim
Thank you very much, Jim! That lens really delivers, even using a 2X TC.
There are ground squirrels around near the location of the falcon nest. Unlike hawks, kites, or eagles, falcons do not see them as a food source. Falcons pretty much eat only other birds.

The A9 III would show less spatial detail but 4x more temporal detail.
Hmm??
Sony ILCE-1 + FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS @ 400 mm, f/2.8, 1/3,200 s, ISO 12,800.
K-H.
K-H., I really enjoy the last GIF here. Excellent!

Thank you Joshua, much appreciated.
Here is a crop of one of the images.
As it was shot with my A1 its size is 1700x1700 pixels.
With the A9 Mark III that would result in about 1200x1200 pixels.
Of course one could use a 1.4x TC to increase spatial resolution at the expense of a reduced field of view.
Well I would be amazed if the anticipated A1 Mark II could get to 120 FPS or will be limited to 60.
If the latter should turn out to be the case one necessarily would have to choose, either higher spatial or temporal resolution.
Both cases would have their uses though - no doubt in my mind.
Picked up a Zeiss Biogon 25/2.8 ZM last fall and equipped it with a front end filter assembly to tame the field curvature. It gaps perfectly between my CV 15/4.5 and 40/1.2. I go back and forth on selling or keeping it as I prefer the 40 as a one lens kit and the 40+15 if I go out with two, but I can't deny how beautifully and razor-sharp it renders, and in such a tiny package.
