Samuli
Apparently the post-glacial landscape of Northern Finland is not that flat. Not only the vast wooded areas and lakes, but also massifs of sedimentary rocks.Thank you for sharing that Samuli. Now I have a feeling of how it looks like in real. And so exactly rendered.
When I think about Finland, many thoughts are passing through my mind.
1.In the youth,I have read all available, magnificent novels of Mika Valtari.I have read all of them with understanding. From the perspective of time it is dificcult to say, which one was the most important.I think that "Sinuhe The Egyptian"(grated the Nobel's prize),"The Black Angel" and "Turms The Immortal"were the best."Michael al-hakim" was very good."Karin the daughter of monsa" was OK,as well as the rest.Nevertheless - Valtari was and is one of my favourite writers ever.
2.Your language- not indoeuropean - Finno-Ugrian - like hungarian,or estonian - the one among a few of this type in Europe,is very unique. So strange and unanderstable for the rest Europeans.Hopefully,I used to love an Estonian girl once upon the time i.e. more than 25 years ago,so I got a vague feeling of how it may sound in practice......wish that this could happen again. :-)
3.Talkoo - common social activities aimed at well-being of the local society - I wish, they were more of it in Poland.
4.Your fierce resistance against the diabolic soviets in 1939 (Talvisota), and defending your independendence against their aggression in 1944/45.
My grandfathers from both sides were fighting against Soviets.
The one from the side of my father volounteered to join the army as the 17 eyars-old boy in 1919.He has passed through all military campaigns-from Kiev to Warsaw and back again to Berezina River (nowadays Belarus, but before - a part of Great Duchess of Lithuania and the Commonvealth of Poland/Great Duchess of Lithuania. In 1920 everybody was thinking that it will be the boreder of the United Commonwealth again,as it used to be for nearly 400 years before).
Twice wounded.Escaped from the soviet captivity, when his regiment was completely surrounded and scattered near Lwów in nowadays Western Ukraine. Before, the shining pearl on the crown of the Kingdom of Poland for nearly 400 years.
I will never forget him telling about the the astonishment in front of the first tank he has met in the life. And the way he's lieutenant,an experienced officer, that served before in the Prussian regiment of the German Imperial Army on the Western Front in France, told how tosuccessfuly destroy it.
He's relations on how is to be pushed by the charging soviet cavalry to the Dnieper River's bank and how to barely survive that (He's well experienced ,formerly Prussian/German leutenant have saved most of the company by the wise command again).
Long live the excellent, thorough infantry training in a good, effective Prussian manner :-)!
I liked to hear most he's tellings about the the feeling of relive he has felt, after our reborn army have beaten soviets near Warsaw in August The 15-17th 1920 and then finally eradiceted the rest of their western armies in September 1920,during the battle of Niemen River.
Too bad that they have not come further, together with "white Russians" forces commanded by the general Wrangel straight on Moscow.Just to defeat the remnants of soviets. And put an end to the most opressive, wicked and ill-willed regime in the history of the World. Before it has a chance to start.
The second grandfather - from the side of my mother was a partisan durin the WWII.At the beginning of the WWII fighting against Germans. After 1945 against soviets.Till the 1945 hunted by GESTAPO,but managed to escape at least 4 times.
Germans were not as cute and wicked as soviets in tracking and murdering their opponents
Between 1945-1950 he was fighting the newly established soviet communist regime in Poland,Then captured and tortured by the traitors, serving soviets.Came out after 5 years from the communist prison as a cripple.Very strong man who previously looked like an athlete, died within two years after releasing from the soviet prison. He could not survived long with both feet and hands smashed during tortures.Same with he's brother, the roman catholic priest and chaplain of that unit.
4.Your nationwise attitude towards the limited resources of your land and stress on high quality education of your citizens.
Finland in many respects is the country to follow. :-)
Sorry to write about history that much. For the third consecutive day,I am just sitting in the building of the "Institute of National Remembrance" in one of the cities in the South-Eastern poland, reading through the original, historical documents, issued by the communist tormentors from so called "Security Service" (Urząd Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego) between the 1950-1953,abot how they tortured my grandfather and his brother. :-(.They were made accessible only a few weeks ago,so i had to come and read them. That is a part of may sad,yet precious heritage.
5.The finnish pine that may grow 200 old .The gnarled. lichen and moss-covered,gnarled tree I can often see in your pictures.
6.The Kalevala poem or saga with a hero Väinämöinen.Like the viking's saga's,but not that heroic.More thruthfull.
This is what comes first to my mind, when thinking about Finnland
