I thought the first image was exceptional until I saw the second!
Amazing detail.

+1! Totally amazing!
Thank you very much, Fred and Philippe! That lens is simply amazing. Canon certainly knows how to make super tele lenses! Although it generated great images on my 1D IV and 5D III, but I never realized the potential of that lens until after the CR trip. That lens in combination of the sensor of the A7r II is simply a killer! I was about to sell that lens and only in the last minute I decided to take it with me, which turned out to be an excellent lens for CR because of the low lighting conditions there. I will have to consider my plan if I am planning of going back to this region again in the future.
Here is another image to show what that lens can do with a 1.4X TC, mind you. This cropped mage is only decent but it shows the quality of the combo lens and sensor of a tiny hummingbird after taking a "shower". I do have images during the showering process but I am still working on them. It would be hard for Sony to match the superb quality of this lens, let alone, to beat it, I would say.

Great shots Joshua! Looking forward for more How much is better EF 400/2.8 L v.II over I.?
Thank you very much, Manuel, Philippe and Mark! I will post some more images, of course....
I never had the first version of the lens. I wasn't really interested in that but I went for the 500mm f/4 back then. The reduction of weight and bulk from the first to the second version of the 400mm is significant. That's what got me interested in that lens. It is still heavy, don't get me wrong but I am a retiree and I managed to carry that lens around in the tropics while sweating like a pig . So, it wasn't that bad, I guess.
Another lens that turned out to be better on this trip than anticipated is the FE 70-300mm. Actually, I managed to get a few sequential burst shots of birds in flight with that lens. I set the AF on Lock-On wide. As long as you keep the entire bird in the frame you are generally fine. But yes, there are a few images that drifted to OOF towards the end of a sequence. The Sony AF is not quite ready for prime time yet. BTW, I didn't bother using my Canon on Metabones for this kind of photography.
Here are 2 images of colorful macaws flight from CR and a perching green one on green background.
Joshua Great shots from CR. You mentioned taking the Canon 400 2.8. Did you use it with the Metabones and A7Rii or just on your 7DM2?
Here is a couple of Taxi shots from Cuba.
A7rII and 24-70 GM. Although there are some official yellow taxi cabs there are just as many, if not more, private individual cabs. It seems they have had Uber long before we did just not the technology. It is amazing how they have managed to keep all the cars from the 50's running. (Many still looking great.)
I'll definitely be posting some more of them as I go through images from the trip.

Thank you, Butch! I used that lens 95% of the time on the A7r II via Metabones. On the last day, I used it on the 7D Mark II and the results are excellent but I haven't had the chance to look at them closely yet.
Great images from Cuba! I remembered we discussed that briefly but too bad, I couldn't pull off that trip... . One fine day, I will.
