I am very curious about your evaluations of the lenses on the A7 vs. the A7R, especially the 28 Cron and other high-end lenses which didn't do well on the A7R.

My very brief experience with A7 showed only one lens substantially improved: Summilux 50 is fine on A7 at infiinity and not on A7R until f:8.0. Other lenses, Elmar 24, ZM 18 and 35 f:2.0, G 28 were plain bad on both cams at infinity.

That's sad. Did you try the 28 Cron?

Maybe the answer is WA SLR MF lenses on the a7 and >40 RF on the Nex 7(6). Bad news for WA RF though.

No, I don't own an 28 'Cron, and the A7 isn't cause to buy one for landscape. Though it should be said that not everyone tests for infinity and looks at the corners. Steve Huff claims that the 'Lux 50 is wonderful without restriction, and others as well. I will have to try the newer generation adapters, though. Voigtländer and Hawks' both claim to have made an improved version for FF, so there must be something to that. My guess is, wider internal diametre.

How would you describe "fine on A7 at infiinity" -- as opposed to "not on A7R until f:8.0"?

Fine on A7 at infinity was my way of describing sharp-ish corners at f:2.0. Pretty much the best one can expect from that lens. That I need to stop down to f:8.0 on A7R tells a different story.

Thanks -- that's a big deal difference (at least for me!) -- thanks for sharing -- you don't happen to have A7 vs A7r photos with the same lens at infinity to show the difference?

Unfotunately I don't, because my dealer could only let me use the A7 for a few minutes, as he expected its owner to come and pick it up, so I just grabbed what shots I could and gave it back. No time to set up a controlled comparison. This is why I paint results with a broad brush rather than go into subtle ones.

You guys with expensive rangefinder lenses, why don't you just send your cameras to Maxmax to remove the filter stack and replace it with a thinner one? It's dirt cheap compared to any Leica lens.
I have thought about doing so, but since sort of every 35 mm lens seem to give the "midzone dip", I think I'll pass and use smallish SLR lenses instead.

There is one exception though; the ZM 35/2.

The A7r club loses a prolific member. Sorry to hear the A7r didn't work out for you Charlie. Hopefully the A7 works well with your lens inventory.

Luckily I have you to set me straight when I get too excited TY for your 28 sample from M9 at RFF

At first I thought the A7r had more center pop even with reduced files, but as I saw alot of good shooters working with it, I just did not see that anymore. I hope

then we have colorshift issues which are related to smearing to some degree I think, but it's nice to have less of that for sure.

next is the first curtain shutter: quieter.

FIle size: it wasn't too bad but smaller would be nicer.

and not least: 600 bucks. I can pay for something with that

This is the first time I've ever returned a camera, and I never thought about it till the tenth time I told someone to get the A7 instead of the A7r. So I called B&H and asked.

I'll be posting more from the A7r over the holidays, work just takes up too much time.

Not out of the question for me, but I'd like to see one first and study the consequences (AF etc) 450, as you say is very reasonable.

Are these the only guys in the states doing that?

How does the 28 f/2.8 Elmarit perform on the a7?

I'm looking at 28mm Elemarit and the ZM 35mm f/2 Biogon, but I've heard of smearing on the 35mm f/2 Bio

Bummer!

Maybe I should start saving my pennies for the 35mm cron or a VM 35mm 1.2.

Well, once I find out how much it costs and how much it improves anything, I may do that.

Actually, if it drastically improves things with the A7R, I might just buy one and have it modified.
