Blame the lens. I shot the same subject with the Sigma 40 1.4 and Nikon 105 1.4, wide open in the same lighting conditions and the only lens that looked off is this one. Thing didn't get sharp till F4. Had the AF point on the eye and the whole nine yards. Shot it at 1.4, 1.8, 2.2 and then brought to F4 for the last batch, which I didn't even post in here. The lens is the issue, you people love to defend it though. This shoot basically confirms that I'm not keeping it.
Good call there. I don't like gear that seems to fight me or that can't be trusted for focus. Takes away from the joy of photography.
I actually checked my posting history in here. I've been complaining about this lens on and off since August. I will probably have it till my 85 1.2 preorder comes in and call it a day. Will try to experiment some more to see if I like it again, but man my copy seems to have a mind of its own SiMuMe wrote:

My intent was certainly not to talk you out of your findings. It was more out of curiosity if you have sharp shots with subject faces in the center of the frame. I think I’ve come to terms that I don’t trust the lens for paid gigs and I now have to center the subjects in the frame for best sharpness more so than any other lens I own. This isn’t ideal and it is frustrating but I do still love this lens. That’s of course a deal-breaker for many.
You may have a bad copy but if you love the 50mm f1.2S, there’s limited value in keeping both.
Too bad the new sigma z-mount lens will be a crop sensor lens. It may have been the best of both worlds between the 50mm f1.2s and the 58 f1.4g

I'm in all honesty just tired of trying to defend this lenses performance. If I have to pay attention to and even find whatever sweet spot that is in this lens instead of just actually shooting the lens, it's not worth keeping in my opinion. I'm not even looking for S lens sharp, I'm looking for just images where I can tell where the focus is and not even getting that on a Z9. I have probably like 10 images off this lens so far that look like they're in focus and the only saving grace I have is that the client didn't pixel peep these things. I came home from that shoot and was like, "I should have used my 50 1.2." Lens is a dud or at least my copy is and for what this thing costs I'm not experimenting with another copy. ...Show more →
Yeah the 50 1.2 is indeed the work horse of my 50's. Now I'm wondering how the Sigma Art 50 I have would've faired. The Art has kind of slow AF, but I never really had sharpness complaints about it, it's just not the 1.2 that lens spoiled me. I'm honestly trying to find a 50 1.2 in DSLR, but it doesn't exist sadly. urbanwild wrote:

Even more than that, it is a shame that the Z cameras force the DX crop when a DX lens is mounted. I bet the 56mm f/1.4 Sigma shot 4:5 crop on a Z7/9 would be pretty sweet and probably caver that part of the sensor. Still a 30MP image, IIRC
My apologies....while on vacation I messed up some of the above photos that were actually with the 28mm f1.4E (now removed and placed in that thread). Adding a few extra 58mm f1.4g images all taken at f1.4.
Missed focus / soft on a few which I know the 50mm 1.2S would have been better (plus no chromatic aberration), but I wouldn't have taken the 50mm f1.2S with a full kit on vacation (nor would I have taken it chest high in water with 2-3 ft waves). Some of the missed focus images were user error including the 2nd to last image my daughter wanted....some were just simply soft at 1.4. No waterproof kit for the water images.....just some bravery / stupidity after 3 rums that afternoon!
I left the chromatic aberration unedited to show those interested in this lens....it's one of the big negatives of this lens and it's not always easy to fix.
Hey fellas!,
Haven't been shooting much these days as I have 3 young kids. A set of 4 year old twins and a 20 month old. I am shooting Sony now and loving it. How is everyone doing!?

Picked this lens up a while ago, really enjoying it so far. Hoping to have some photos for this thread sometime soon. It has pretty much been glued to my Z5 since purchase.
